TURLOCK, Calif- After falling behind by two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match, Sonoma State struck for three unanswered goals, including two early in the second half to defeat host Cal State Stanislaus, 3-2, on Sunday at Warrior Stadium. The Seawolves (5-4-1, 5-2-1 CCAA) have won five of their last six matches and move into a tie for first place in the North Division standings with Chico State. The Warriors (5-2-3, 4-2-2 CCAA), who came into the weekend ranked 21st in the nation, surrendered their position atop the division standings with Sunday's loss.

"This win means so much to our team," SSU head coach Emiria Salzmann said. "It was a top opponent and the fourth game in a row on the road. We showed an incredible amount of mental strength to come back from being down 2-0 and win. We are so proud."

Sunday didn't start in favor of Sonoma State. Cal State Stanislaus' Bernie Bettencourt and Karenee Demery connected for the first goal of the day, just 15:54 after kickoff. Only three and a half minutes later, the Warriors scored again. This time, a corner kick by Marissa Dunaway found Demery, who then redirected the ball to Alexia Poon at the goalmouth. It would be Poon that put Cal State Stanislaus up 2-0 at the 19:09 mark.

Down, but certainly not out, the Seawolves cut the Warrior lead in half five minutes later. Elena Catania served a cross that got in behind two Cal State Stanislaus defenders where Taylor Edmonds slotted one past CSUS keeper Millie Brown and Sonoma State trailed 2-1. The score would remain that way heading into the second half of play.

Only 1:24 after halftime, Kate McFarland sent a long pass upfield to Sara Studer that drew Brown out of her goal box and Studer was able to sneak one past Brown and into the net for the equalizer at 46:24. From then on both teams would fight back and fourth, attempting two shots each over the next 13 minutes.

At 59:34, Sonoma State would strike again. Megan Cunningham received a pass from McFarland and finished inside the right post and the Seawolves would overcome the early two-goal deficit to lead 3-2 with 30 minutes left in regulation.

Playing with a sense of urgency, Cal State Stanislaus put the pressure on the Sonoma State defense, outshooting the Seawolves 5-1 the rest of the way. However, SSU keeper Alexis Sciacqua and her defense held strong to earn the come from behind upset victory over the nationally-ranked Warriors.

Sciacqua made four saves in the win, including three in the second half, as Sonoma State was outshot in the match, 13-11.

Sonoma State will return home after its long four-match road trip in which the Seawolves went 3-1. They will host Cal State L.A. on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
