BOX SCORE Sonoma State 1, Cal State San Bernardino 1 (2OT)
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- Sophomore sensation
Taylor Varnadore netted his 11th goal of the season, but his lone strike would not spell victory for Sonoma State as the Seawolves played to a 1-1 tie with host Cal State San Bernardino on Friday afternoon. The Seawolves, now 9-4-2, 8-3-2 CCAA, began the day up two points in the CCAA's North Division. Cal State San Bernardino goes to 5-8-2, 3-8-2 CCAA.
Sonoma outshot San Bernardino 23-9 in the game. They held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks and had six less fouls, but they would have to play catch up after the Coyotes' Derek Taddei scored the opener in the 62nd minute. The goal capped off over an hour of scoreless soccer, in which Sonoma State had opportunities, but came up empty time after time.
Said head coach
Marcus Ziemer, "We played well and created a lot of chances, but their keeper (Tanner Olinger) made a few real nice saves."
Down a goal in the game's final 15 minutes, the Seawolves turned to an experienced goal scorer for the equalizer. Set up by senior
Trevor Hurst, Varnadore punched the ball in from straight on for his team-high 11th goal of the season. Hurst, for his part, earned his conference-leading ninth assist of the year and the 21st of his career, tying him with current assistant coach Benjamin Ziemer for seventh on the all-time list.
"Despite missing out on our chances earlier, we showed a lot to battle back after going down 1-0," said Ziemer, "but you've got to give San Bernardino a lot of credit. They build up, a lot like we do, and it made for an entertaining game. It's just unfortunate we couldn't take three points from this one, so now we need to bounce back and perform well at San Diego on Sunday."
Taylor Jones continued his strong play in goal, making three saves in 110 minutes of action.
The Seawolves will now await word this evening from the Chico State/Cal State East Bay game. The Wildcats enter the match three points shy of the first place Seawolves.
Sonoma State takes on UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon down in La Jolla.
