Seawolves Settle For Scoreless Draw With Coyotes

Alexis Sciacqua recorded her seventh shutout of the season on Friday.
BOX SCORE Sonoma State 0, Cal State San Bernardino 0 (2OT)

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif-  Though the Sonoma State offense would be silenced for just the third time this year, the defense stood strong, as the Seawolves picked up a valuable point on Friday in a 0-0 draw on the road at South Division contender Cal State San Bernardino.  The Seawolves, who entered Friday's action with a four-point lead in the CCAA North, go to 8-5-2, 8-3-2 CCAA on the season.  The Coyotes are now 7-3-4, 6-3-3 CCAA.

The Seawolves would outshoot the Coyotes on the day, 13-11.  Thanks to a stout defensive effort, just four of the Coyotes' shots were on goal.  Three of those were saved by junior goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua and the other was posted as a team save.

After a fairly quiet first half, the Seawolves came out and peppered the San Bernardino defense with three shots in the first four minutes of the second.  Coming away empty from those attempts, the teams settled in.

The Coyotes had a nice opportunity in the 57th minute, but an attempt by Casey Hirsch clanked off the post.

Just one shot was credited in the first overtime and only three in the second extra period.

Sciacqua earned her seventh clean sheet of the 2011 season and the 10th of her career.

The Seawolves entered Friday's match with a four-point lead over Cal State Stanislaus and a five-point advantage over Chico State.  The Warriors take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night and the Wildcats face Cal State East Bay on Friday evening.  Regardless of the evening's results, the Seawolves will remain alone in first place in the CCAA North.

Next up for Sonoma is a showdown with the first place team in the South, UC San Diego, on Sunday in La Jolla.  The Tritons, last year's national runner-up, are 9-1-4 overall heading into Friday's game against Humboldt State.  The are ranked No. 8 in this week's NSCAA national poll.
