Men's Soccer Plays To 0-0 Draw With Stanislaus

Trevor Hurst and the Seawolves will look to Sunday against Chico.
BOX SCORE BOX SCORE:  Sonoma State 0, Cal State Stanislaus 0

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  A glance at the final score always tell the full story.  Before an announced crowd of 523 on Friday afternoon, the Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer teams went 110 minutes without finding the net in a frustrating 0-0 tie.  The game was up and down with each team having opportunities, though the Seawolves will feel the string most as they had 19 shots, including nine on goal, in the game.  The Seawolves will now need a win against Chico State on Sunday to extend their season.

UPDATE FOLLOWING FRIDAY'S ACTION:  Chico State defeated Humboldt State to clinch the North Division.  However, thanks to a Cal State San Bernardino win over Cal Poly Pomona, the Seawolves path to the CCAA Tournament is now clear.  With a win over Chico on Sunday, the Seawolves will advance to the CCAA Tournament as a wild card.  A loss or tie will make things very interesting.

Sonoma State got six shots from Taylor Varnadore in Friday's game and they had several optimistic chances late in the game and in overtime.  In fact, the Seawolves were pressing clear to the final buzzer, with two opportunities inside the final minute.  However, it was not to be, thanks in part to a fine performance by Warrior keeper Bill Hambleton, who made seven saves.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, "I was really happy with how we played.  We kept the ball and controlled the game.  Stanislaus is dangerous because when we turned the ball over, they hit it long and if our transition wasn't sharp then they'd catch us off guard.  Fortunately that didn't happen often."

The Seawolves controlled the ball for a good portion of Friday's game, with CCAA assist leader Trevor Hurst doing his best to set something up.  "Trevor Hurst was on fire today, but couldn't quite create the goal," said Ziemer, "They subbed several players in to try to deal with him."  Ziemer also recognized a fine outing from freshman Sean Callahan, saying, "Sean came off the bench and played great.  He isn't the biggest guy, but he won every head ball in the 2nd half and OT."

The Seawolves got a strong effort from their defense on Friday.  Led by goalkeeper Taylor Jones, who made six saves, the defense kept a potent Warrior attack at bay throughout the game.  Stanislaus' best chance to score came in the first half when a Josh Handey missile hit the crossbar.

It was an extremely physical game, with 30 fouls being called (19 on Stanislaus) and six yellow cards being showed (five on Stanislaus).

The 0-0 result was the first scoreless draw for the Seawolves in nearly two years, since a November 1st, 2009 match against Humboldt State.

Regardless of this evening's outcomes around the CCAA, the Seawolves will have a lot to play for on Sunday.  In addition to a possible postseason berth, the Seawolves will be celebrating Senior Day against longtime rival Chico State.  Kickoff is set for 11:30 am.  Concluded Ziemer, "We need a little help now, but we are still alive and will be ready for Chico on Sunday."
