BOX SCORE BOX SCORE: Sonoma State 1, Cal State Stanislaus 1
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Down a goal in the second half, senior
Taylor Colacion netted the equalizer in the 61st minute to give Sonoma State a 1-1 tie against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The tie leaves the Seawolves in control of their own destiny heading in to Sunday's regular season finale against Chico State. With a win, the Seawolves (8-6-3, 8-4-3 CCAA) will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament for the first time since 2008.
The matchup between the Seawolves and Wildcats on Sunday will do more than determine who goes to the conference tournament, it will decide the 2011 CCAA North Division champion. Chico leads by two points, so a win or tie would spell a title for the 'Cats. A Sonoma victory would put the trophy in their case.
Friday's game started out promising for the Seawolves. In just the ninth minute, the Seawolves were presented with a tremendous opportunity to go up a goal when they were afforded a penalty kick. However,
Ashley Martin's attempt was saved by Warrior keeper Millie Brown, and the tie was preserved.
Early in the second half, the Warriors drew first blood when last year's conference player of the year, Karenee Demery scored her team-high 10th goal of the season off an assist from Marissa Dunaway.
The Stanislaus lead would be short-lived, however, as the Seawolves drew even exactly ten minutes later.
Sara Studer served up a free kick that was headed into the goal by Colacion.
Both teams would have chances in the overtime periods, but none would be more heart stopping than the final play of the game. With the clock ticking down, Demery shot the ball towards the goal, but her attempt would go just high, clanking off the crossbar with just three seconds to play.
Stanislaus held a favorable advantage in shots (16-8), though Sonoma led in corner kicks (8-4).
Alexis Sciacqua ended up making seven saves in a fine effort between the posts. Her counterpart, Brown, made three saves.
Sunday's kickoff is set for 2:00 pm. The game will be preceded by the men's game. Prior to the match, the Seawolves will honor their departing seniors as part of Senior Day, in their final game at Seawolf Field.
