Late Goal Stuns Sonoma, Season Ends In Heartbreak

Seven women's soccer seniors saw their college careers end on Sunday.
BOX SCORE Chico State 2, Sonoma State 1

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- A win or a tie on Sunday would have sent the Sonoma State women's soccer team to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for the first time since 2008. The trip to Turlock next weekend looked promising when Megan Foy scored an early second half goal to knot the match at 1-1. But, with just 4:17 left on the clock in regulation, Chico State struck for the eventual game-winning goal and held on in the final minutes to win 2-1, capturing the CCAA's North Division crown and ending the Seawolves' season.

Sonoma State, which started the season 0-3-1, rebounded to put itself in prime position to win the division title, entering this weekend's play. However, a tie and a loss in the final two games of the regular season doomed the Seawolves and their quest to qualify for the CCAA tournament. The 2011 season ends for first-year head coach Emiria Salzmann and company, as they finish with a 8-7-3 overall record and 8-5-3 in the North Division.

Chico State came out strong in the first half and eventually outshot Sonoma State, 9-4, in the first 45 minutes. Alexis Sciacqua made some big plays to keep the Wildcats out of the net, stopping five shots on goal, until the 41:34 mark when the Wildcats' Alyx Williams fought through a scrum at the near post to blast a shot past a diving Sciacqua for the 1-0 Chico State lead.

Right out of the chutes in the second half, Sonoma State was quick to regain the momentum. The spirits of the home team exploded just 1:36 after halftime when Sara Studer played a corner kick out to Foy on the far side where Foy stood alone. She gained possession, set herself up for the attempt and rocketed the ball through Chico and Sonoma players in the penalty box, finding the back of the net from 25 yards out to tie the match at 1-1.

From then on, the Seawolves found themselves with many opportunities to take the lead, outshooting the Wildcats 10-6 in the second half. However, Chico goalkeeper Brianna Furner and the defense in front of her were able to hold the Sonoma offense from scoring again.

It was at the 85:43 mark when the Wildcats connected for the go-ahead score. Halima Abdelshife found herself with possession of the ball after a defensive miscue at the near post. She was able to turn and poke the ball past Sciacqua from 15 yards out to give Chico State a 2-1 lead with just over four minutes left in regulation.

Trailing by one, the Seawolves put the offensive pressure on the Wildcats, peppering the the visitors with four shots in the final two minutes. A header by Taylor Colacion would fly high, an attempt by Bree Robles at point blank range on the far post was knocked away by a Chico defender at the last minute, Sara Studer would send a shot wide right, and the final attempt came off the foot of Sciacqua, who came out of her goal box to rifle a shot from 30 yards out with just four seconds on the clock. It would be caught by Furner just before the buzzer sounded, however, and Chico State erupted in celebration with the 2-1 victory.

In the end, the Wildcats held a narrow 15-14 advantage in shots, led by four off the foot of Lisa Webster and three by Carly Singer. Furner made three saves in the contest, two of which came in the final half.

For the Seawolves, Studer led the way with four shot attempts. Sciacqua made five saves while the SSU defense came up big on three occasions with goal-saving stops in front of the net.

Sonoma State went 8-4-2 in the final 14 matches of the season after starting 0-3-1, exceeding all expectations after suffering through a four-win season just one year ago.

Sunday's loss also marked the final collegiate match for seven seniors, who were honored in a special pre-game ceremony. Taylor Edmonds, Megan Cunningham, Allie Maduell, Katie Parucha, Taylor Colacion, Marissa Shaw and Kiley Brown all appeared in the match on Sunday.
