BOX SCORE
SANTA ROSA, Calif- After a Cal State L.A. foul in the box on a Sonoma State corner kick with just under two minutes left in regulation,
Kelly Davila converted the ensuing penalty kick to knot the match at 1-1, forcing overtime. Despite playing with a man down after a red card late in the second half, the Seawolves survived six Golden Eagle shots in the two extra periods to emerge with the 1-1 draw.
Sonoma State moves to 6-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the CCAA, but falls into a tie for second place in the North Division standings with Cal State Stanislaus. Chico State earned a 2-1 victory over UC San Diego on Friday to move into first place. Cal State L.A. (6-1-4, 4-1-4 CCAA) recorded its fourth tie of the season and remains in second place in the South Division behind SSU's upcoming opponent, No. 24 Cal State Dominguez Hills.
"I thought we started slow, but we played well in the second half and in the overtime periods," SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "But I think a tie is a fair result. We had some chances (including a goal that was called back in the second overtime), but Cal State L.A. had some chances as well late in the game."
It was a relatively slow start to the match for both teams, but the Golden Eagles held a 6-4 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes. However, neither team was able to find the net. The match progressively got more intense as the second half got rolling, but it would be Cal State L.A. who drew first blood. At 70:07, Martin Sandoval lofted a pass from the right sideline that found Jason Swope sprinting from the top of the box. Swope came barreling through the goal box and bodied the ball into the net at point blank range to give CSULA the 1-0 lead.
Trailing by a goal with 20 minutes remaining, Sonoma State fired up the engines and attacked relentlessly. In a 12-minute span, the Seawolves outshot the Golden Eagles, 7-0. At 87:57, Sonoma State got its break.
Trevor Hurst sent a corner kick into the box from the far side and as Davila came crashing in on the near post, a CSULA defender was called for a foul and Davila was awarded a penalty kick. Davila tucked the ball into the left side of the net and the game was deadlocked at 1-1 with 1:56 left in regulation.
However, just before the 90-minute buzzer sounded, Sonoma State would have to play the rest of the match with just 10 players on the field after
Michel Arroyo was ejected with a red card foul at 89:14.
In the first overtime, Cal State L.A. peppered SSU goalkeeper
Taylor Jones with five shots, four of which Jones made saves on. Hurst managed to attempt a shot for the Seawolves in the first overtime, but the match would advance to the second and final OT period.
At the 103:55 mark, Cal State L.A.'s Jason Swope almost gave the visitors the win after his bicycle kick in the penalty box glanced off the crossbar and out of play. Then, over a minute later, it looked as if Sonoma State would net the golden goal, but just as soon as the Sonoma State bench ran onto the field to join the celebration, a late offsides call was given and the goal was waved off. Davila got one more attempt in the match, but CSULA keeper Waleed Cassis made a save on the ball and it would be the last shot by either team.
Taylor Varnadore again led Sonoma State in shot attempts with six before leaving the game at the end of regulation with an injury. Davila took three shots, but the Seawolves were outshot in the match, 21-18. 11 of the 21 Cal State L.A. shots were saved by Jones, a career-high. Cassis made five saves for the Golden Eagles.
Sonoma State will now focus on 24th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Seawolves and Toros are no strangers, as the two teams have faced each other in each of the last four CCAA title games with SSU winning two of the last three times (including last season). SSU and CSUDH will face off at the Seawolf Soccer Field on Sunday, starting at 2:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The Seawolves started
Taylor Jones between the posts on Friday, making his first start in that position since moving to a full-time forward position in 2009. Jones last played goalkeeper for SSU on Oct. 21, 2008 in a 2-1 overtime victory over Fresno Pacific. The six-foot senior from Novato had a huge game, making a career-high 11 saves and is now 3-0-2 as the goalkeeper of record.
