BOX SCORE

SANTA ROSA, Calif- Despite holding a 14-12 advantage in shots, the Sonoma State women's soccer team couldn't overcome three first half goals in a 3-0 loss to 24th-ranked Cal State L.A. on Friday afternoon at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. The Seawolves fall to 5-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play while the Golden Eagles improve to 7-2-2 and 5-2-2 in the CCAA.

Cal State L.A., ranked at No. 24 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 Poll, drew first blood on a play in the box that started with a shot by Lisa Ohberg, which was blocked by a Sonoma State defender. Ayana Younge took possession of the ball off the ricochet and tapped it to over to Norie Pablo, who slotted it past SSU keeper Alexis Sciacqua for the 1-0 lead at 15:53.

The Seawolves came back to earn a corner kick and two shot attempts, but the Golden Eagles would find the net again, this time at the 25:38 mark on a header by Janet Mendez, which came after a corner kick by Justine Telles and a pass into the box by Natalie Martin. Only three minutes later, CSULA netted another one. Ohberg took a shot off of Sciacqua, but the ball bounced back to Ohberg, who then shook off a defender and tapped the ball across the face of the goal, which then found its home right inside the left post at 28:49 and the Golden Eagles led 3-0.

For the remainer of the period, Sonoma State would outshoot Cal State L.A., 3-1, but to no avail and the Seawolves would trail 3-0 at halftime, even though each team attempted six shots each.

In the second half, the Seawolves would again put pressure on the Golden Eagles, outshooting the visitors 8-6 in the period, but none of the eight shots would be on goal and Sonoma State would eventually be held scoreless in the 3-0 loss.

Elena Catania attempted a team-high three shots and Sara Studer would chip in with two. Sciacqua made four saves in the match, two in each half. Her counterpart, CSULA's Jessie Walworth, made two saves, both in the opening 45 minutes.

With seven matches remaining in the regular season, Sonoma State will turn its attention to Sunday, when the Seawolves host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11:30 a.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Following Sunday's match with the Toros, SSU will then play four of its last six matches on the road.
