ROHNERT PARK, Calif- After a scoreless first half that saw ten Sonoma State shots and plenty of offensive chances by Santa Rosa JC, sophomore
Kelly Davila scored two second half goals to help Sonoma State defeat the visiting Bear Cubs, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Junior goalkeeper
Andrew Ball earned his second straight shutout, making three saves in the victory.
"It was a long weekend for us all (after hosting the annual weekend alumni celebration)," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said, "but we played well enough to win. We did a great job in the second half and we really showed the depth of our team. (Andrew) Ball did a great job for us in the goal today."
It was a back and forth battle between the two squads in the opening 45 minutes. The Seawolves led 10-6 in the shot department, but had nothing to show for it as the Bear Cubs held the high-powered SSU offense scoreless.
It was a different story in the second half, though, as Davila finally broke through at the 59:16 mark to give Sonoma State the 1-0 lead. It was the effort by
Ebby Lombardi, who crossed the ball from the right sideline, finding
Anders Perez in the box. Perez headed the ball into Davila crashing the goalmouth and Davila finished for his first score of the match. Davila again found the net at the 77:13 mark after taking a pass from Perez.
The Seawolves attempted another ten shots in the second half and finished the match 20-9 in shots.
Taylor Varnadore had six shots to lead all players, two of which were on goal.
"They (Santa Rosa JC) has the makings of a really good team," said Ziemer. "They are going to do very well this season."
Sonoma State will have one more preseason tune-up before the regular season gets under way on Sept. 1. The Seawolves will host the Sonoma County Sol on Saturday, kicking off at 5 p.m., which is part of a doubleheader with the SSU women's soccer team. The women will play their first (and only) exhibition match prior to the men's match on Saturday, hosting UC Santa Cruz at 3 p.m.
