ROHNERT PARK, Calif- It could have been considered "Alumni Game, Part II", but when the dust settled, it was the Sonoma County Sol who claimed a 1-0 victory over the Sonoma State men's soccer team on Saturday evening at the Seawolf Soccer Field. The Seawolves wrapped up their exhibition schedule and will kick off the regular season on Thursday when they host Academy of Art at 2 p.m.
"The loss was disappointing," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "We came in looking for a win, but most of the Sol players were SSU alumni. We moved the ball pretty well and created some great chances, but Steve Christensen, from the 2002 national championship team, was fantastic in goal for the Sol."
There was no doubt that Christensen made the most against his former collegiate team. He made eight saves in his shutout effort, most of which were diving stops.
It was a scoreless tie through much of the match, but on a free kick from 25 yards out, Sonoma County Sol's Angel Acevedo blasted an angling shot from the left side of the box that found a home in the right corner of the net, just beyond the outstretched arms of SSU netminder
Andrew Ball. It put the Sol up 1-0 with just under 14 minutes to play in the half and was the eventual game winner.
Ten of the 14 players that suited up for the Sol on Saturday played collegiate soccer under Ziemer at SSU.
With the regular season to look forward to, Ziemer said, "we are really looking forward to playing Academy of Art on Thursday. It will be our first game that counts for our 2011 record and we will be pumped up for it."
