BOX SCORE

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Ashley Martin netted her second goal of the season on a header that glanced off the crossbar in the 21st minute, but despite a lopsided 29-4 shot advantage in the match, Sonoma State was forced to a 1-1 tie with visiting Humboldt State on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field. The Seawolves, however, earn their first point of the season, moving to 0-3-1 overall (0-1-1 CCAA). The Lumberjacks go to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.

Sonoma State dominated the match from start to finish, outshooting Humboldt State 12-2 in the first half and 12-1 in the second half. Martin's goal at the 20:25 mark was the result of a nice serve into the goal box by Kate McFarland. Martin, who crowded the goal box on the pass from McFarland, jumped up and headed the ball that eventually hit the crossbar and bounced into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The offensive pressure continued against the Lumberjacks' defense, firing 15 shots on goal in the 110-minute contest. It was at the 40:11 mark, though, that Humboldt State scored the equalizer. On a restart, Liz Christensen angled a free kick from 20 yards out that flew past Sonoma State's makeshift wall and goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua to knot the game at 1-1.

Megan Cunningham had a chance to give Sonoma State the lead at the 49th minute when Humboldt State was called for a foul in the goal box. Cunningham took the penalty kick, but launched it right at HSU netminder Jennie Paugh, who made the stop.

Paugh was one of the busiest players on the field on Sunday. She made 14 saves in the match, including seven in the second half alone. Macy Usher and Taylor Colacion had a match-high five shots apiece. Four of the five shots by Colacion were on goal, but none could find the net.

In the first overtime period, the Seawolves blasted two shots and held the 'Jacks from attempting any, but again, Paugh's play helped advance the match to the second and final overtime. In the final extra 10-minute period, the Seawolf pressure intensified and SSU outshot HSU 3-1, but the match ended in the 1-1 deadlock.

Taylor Edmonds and Cunningham attempted four shots, while Martin and Sara Studer shot the ball three times. Sciacqua didn't make a save on Sunday; the only shot on goal found the net on the free kick by Christensen. The Seawolves had 11 corner kicks to the Lumberjacks' one.

Sonoma State will next host Cal State East Bay on Friday. First kick is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
