BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- After a scoreless, back-and-forth first half,
Ashley Martin scored a goal in the 51st minute and
Kiley Brown added an insurance goal just under 24 minutes later to help Sonoma State secure its first victory of the 2011 season, a 2-0 triumph over visiting Cal State East Bay on Friday. The win becomes SSU head coach
Emiria Salzmann's first career win at Sonoma State.
The Seawolves improve to 1-3-1 overall with a 1-1-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Pioneers fall to 2-3-0 and 1-2-0 in CCAA action.
"It feels so great to get our first conference win, we deserved it," said Salzman after the match. "It's been building for the last few games, so to finally get the result to match our efforts is rewarding."
In the opening half, both teams battled to trade shots on their respective offensive sides, but the nets would remain untouched prior to the intermission. SSU goalkeeper
Alexis Sciacqua made a pair of saves, including one just over two minutes into the match. Martin almost gave the Seawolves a first-half lead when she went one-on-one with Cal State East Bay netminder Nina Cefalo, but Martin's shot at 17:13 went wide, hitting off the left post and bouncing back into play. Sonoma State held the slight advantage in shots, 4-3, after the initial 45 minutes of play.
As the second half began, so did the momentum for the Seawolves. Martin's score at 50:59 was a result of a nice serve by
Sara Studer that found Martin, who sent it home into the right side of the net for her third score of the season. Sonoma State continued its offensive pressure and eventually outshot Cal State East Bay 8-2 in the final period (12-5 for the match).
With just under 16 minutes remaining in regulation,
Marissa Shaw sent a ball into a crowded goal box where it deflected off a Pioneer defender and what looked to be in the hands of CSUEB's Cefalo. However, the ball bounced out of Cefalo's grip and Brown was there to pick up the trash and score the insurance goal at 74:26. It was Brown's sixth career goal and first since the 2009 season.
Alicia Mertz almost twice put the ball in the net for Sonoma State late in the match, but her header attempt at 78:30 went high and another shot five minutes later was stopped by Cefalo -- one of two saves for the Pioneer goalkeeper, both in the second half. Her counterpart, Sciacqua, made three saves for SSU. The Seawolves held a huge advantage in corner kicks, attempting nine as the Pioneers record any.
Eugenie Foote attempted two of the five Cal State East Bay shots on the afternoon. Martin,
Bree Robles and Mertz each fired two shots as well.
Sonoma State will look to make it two in a row when it hosts Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, starting at 3:00 p.m.
