BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Bree Robles put Sonoma State up 1-0 with a first half goal and
Taylor Edmonds and
Katie Parucha added scores in the second half to give the Seawolves a 3-0 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field. It is the second straight victory for SSU (2-3-1, 2-1-1 CCAA), which outscored its opponents 5-0 this weekend, while CSUMB falls to 2-3-0 (1-3-0 CCAA).
Robles netted her second goal of the season (and of her career) at the 30:28 mark of the first half to give Sonoma State the early 1-0 lead. It was the result of a free kick by
Sara Studer near the left sideline that bounced around between both Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State players in the penalty box. #J.J. McFarlin# was finally able to get a head on the ball, redirecting it to Robles, who squirted it past CSUMB keeper Kendra Gillio, landing it just inside the right goal post.
Sonoma State almost grabbed a two-goal lead after another kick by Studer, but the following header by
Katie Lenci ricochet off the post and back into play before it was cleared by the Otters. Another header by
Megan Foy just before halftime also just missed, sailing the ball high over the crossbar. The Seawolves would hold a 7-2 advantage in shots after the opening 45 minutes of play -- both Cal State Monterey Bay shots came in the first 7:49 of the match.
After both teams traded shots to open the second half, Robles again helped Sonoma State find the net. This time, she lofted a corner kick into play, finding
Taylor Colacion at the top of the penalty box. A squibbed shot attempt bounced up to
Kiley Brown who redirected the ball to
Taylor Edmonds. Edmonds finished the ball into the right side of the net and the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead at the 55:56 mark.
The Seawolves continued the offensive pressure, as the hosts took eight corner kicks in the second half alone (10-1 in the entire match). SSU also attempted four of the five shots taken between the two teams in the final 45 minutes.
With just 22 seconds remaining on the clock,
Katie Parucha padded the Seawolf lead with a goal after receiving an entry pass by Robles. It put the punctuation mark on a day (and a weekend) dominated by Sonoma State, which will head into a four-match road swing riding a three-match unbeaten streak.
Edmonds led the offense with three of Sonoma State's 11 shot attempts in the match and Robles added two. SSU netminder
Alexis Sciacqua made one stop, recording her second straight shutout between the posts. She saw just three shot attempts all day, two of which came off the foot of Marlina Massagli.
Sonoma State will travel to Pomona on Friday to face the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
