Seawolves Fall Short Despite Late Scoring Attempts

Justin Ferreira and the Seawolves remain in first place in the North Division.
BOX SCORE

POMONA, Calif- Trailing by one after a goal in the 30th minute, Sonoma State saw many opportunities to even the score late in the second half, including a header by Justin Ferreira that bounced off the crossbar with just 40 seconds left in regulation. It would be the last of SSU's chances, though, as host Cal Poly Pomona held onto a tight 1-0 victory on Friday night at Kellogg Field in Pomona.

The Seawolves (5-2, 4-1 CCAA) see their win streak snapped at four, while the Broncos improve to an identical 5-2 and 4-1 record.

"It was a physical game and we played great, but we just couldn't get the bounces we needed," SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer said.

Two of Sonoma State's 16 shot attempts in the match ricochet off the posts, including the heartbreaking miss by Ferreira at 89:20. At that moment, just as they have done all season, Trevor Hurst lofted a corner kick into the box where Ferreira came flying in, but the attempt bounced away. Hurst was granted another corner kick just seconds later, but the Cal Poly Pomona defense stood tall and cleared the ball away to hold onto the victory.

SSU's final five shots came in the final six minutes of regulation, despite playing with just ten men on the field. Michel Arroyo was issued a straight red card in the 52nd minute and the Seawolves were forced to play a man down for most of the second half. However, Sonoma State kept the pressure on the Cal Poly Pomona defense and outshot the hosts, 16-14, in the match.

The goal by the Broncos, which held up to be the game-winner, was netted by Luis Gonzalez at 29:55. On a 50/50 ball in the air, Gonzalez, Sonoma State keeper Andrew Ball and one of the SSU defenders went up for possession, but Ball and his teammate collided, allowing Gonzalez to easily put the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead -- and eventual final score.

It was a game that seemed to be dominated by the Seawolves, even though many of the stat lines between the two teams were almost identical. The difference was CPP goalkeeper Andrew Todd, who made seven big saves, including four in the second half. Four of his saves were also made on header attempts by SSU players.

Hurst fired a team-high five shots in the loss, four of which were on goal and saved by Todd. Ferreira also had many chances, but couldn't convert on any of his four attempts. Ball made one save between the posts for the Seawolves.

Cal Poly Pomona's Gonzalez also attempted five shots, including the eventual game-winner in the first half.

Sonoma State will look to bounce back when it travels back to the Bay Area for a showdown with San Francisco State on Sunday. Kickoff from Cox Stadium in San Francisco is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
