BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Taylor Edmonds tapped a cross from
Holly Weaver into the net in the 86th minute to give Sonoma State a 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday afternoon in Pomona. The victory is the third straight for the Seawolves as they even out their overall record at 3-3-1 and move to an impressive 3-1-1 in conference play. The Broncos fall to 4-2-1, 2-2-1 CCAA.
The Seawolves are currently tied atop the CCAA's North Division. With ten points (3-1-1), the Seawolves are deadlocked with 13th-ranked Cal State Stanislaus (3-1-1), following the Warriors' 2-1 upset loss to Cal State East Bay on Friday.
Following an 0-3-1 start, the Seawolves are unbeaten in their last four matches and their three CCAA wins equal their total from the 2010 season.
Though no scoring would take place in the first half, the Seawolves controlled play, outshooting the Broncos 6-2.
The shots would even out in the second half, but the one that counted came off the foot of a Seawolf. With just under four and a half minutes to go in reguation, Weaver sent a cross from the left side that was tapped into the net by Edmonds from about six yards out. It was the second goal of the season for Edmonds, a sign that the senior is returning to the form that saw her earn CCAA Freshman of the Year honors in 2008.
Cal Poly Pomona would hold a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks with Sonoma State leading in shots, 13-9. Fouls were fairly even, 14-12 in Sonoma's favor.
The Seawolves are now 5-1-2 against the Broncos since the 2004 season.
Sonoma State will try to run their winning streak to four in a row on Sunday when they head north to take on the defending CCAA champion San Francisco State Gators.
In case you were wondering... With an odd number of teams in the CCAA's north (7) and south (5) regions, one squad from the north must become a member of the south for divisional play. This year, San Francisco State is that team, thus the odd travel arrangement for the weekend.
