BOX SCORE
ARCATA, Calif-
Taylor Colacion received a corner kick by
Ashley Martin and slotted the ball into net just 18 minutes into the match while
Alexis Sciacqua made three saves to post her fourth shutout of the season, helping Sonoma State to a Thursday afternoon 1-0 victory over Humboldt State in Arcata. The Seawolves have won four of their last five matches, improving to 4-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 the CCAA. The Lumberjacks (1-5-2, 0-5-2 CCAA) remain winless in conference play.
It was an evenly-matched first half, as both teams traded shots and went into halftime with six shots apiece. However, it was Sonoma State that had the upper hand on the scoreboard, following Colacion's strike at 18:02. Martin lofted a corner kick into the box, but Humboldt State's goalkeeper, Jennie Paugh, missed her attempt to snatch the ball from the air. As a result, Paugh found herself out of position to stop Colacion's shot from reaching the back of the net.
Over the next ten minutes, Humboldt State turned on the offensive pressure and fired four of the next five shots -- all four shot attempts sailed high or wide, though. Martin booted another corner kick at the 33 minute mark, but was cleared by the Lumberjack defense and it would be the last of scoring attempts for the Seawolves before halftime. Humboldt State set up for a corner kick just four minutes before the intermission, but was successfully cleared by Sonoma State.
In the second half, the Seawolves kept the pressure on the Lumberjack backline, taking eight of the 12 shots attempted in the final 45 minutes. Despite the fact that HSU was outshot 8-4 in the second half, the hosts would fire three of their attempts on goal, keeping Sciacqua busy between the posts early in the period. The Sonoma State defense stepped up big for the final 20 minutes and didn't allow a Humboldt State shot the rest of the way. The 'Jacks, however, earned a corner kick with less than a minute remaining in the match, but the play was again cleared by the Seawolf eleven and SSU held on for the 1-0 victory.
Sciacqua made three saves in her fourth shutout effort of the season, and the seventh of her career.
Megan Foy led the offensive attack with a team-high three shots, two of which came on goal.
Paugh made four saves for Humboldt State and Tamra Jones had three shots to lead the Lumberjack offense.
Sonoma State will now set its sights on Cal State Stanislaus, which is ranked at No. 21 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 Poll. The Seawolves and Warriors will face off at Warrior Stadium in Turlock on Sunday, kicking off at 11:30 a.m.
