Chico Nets Game-Winner In Double OT, Sonoma Falls

Macy Usher netted her fourth career goal in Friday's loss at Chico State.
BOX SCORE

CHICO, Calif- Macy Usher gave Sonoma State an early lead with a goal just under five minutes into the match, but host Chico State scored the equalizer late in the second half and netted the golden goal with 3:39 remaining in double overtime to defeat the Seawolves, 2-1, on Friday night at University Soccer Stadium in Chico. Sonoma State remains winless this season (0-3-0) while Chico State earned its first win of 2011 (1-1-1). It was the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener for both teams.

Usher put the Seawolves up just 4:49 into the match after heading in a corner kick from Sara Studer. Each team would trade shots throughout the first half, but Sonoma State would take a 1-0 lead with a 5-4 shot advantage into halftime.

At the 72 minute mark, Chico State knotted the match up at 1-1 when Scotie Walker found Lisa Webster running toward the mouth of the goal following a corner kick. Webster then slotted it home to the left of SSU goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua and the match would eventually go to overtime. Sciacqua, though, made two of her six saves in the final 14 minutes of regulation -- five of her six stops came in a half dominated offensively by Chico State. The Wildcats outshot the Seawolves, 9-1, in the second half.

In the first overtime, neither team managed to get a shot off, sending the match to the second and final overtime period. Sonoma State almost found the net when Studer lofted another corner kick at the goalmouth where Shayla Mellenthin put a foot on it, but Chico netminder Brianna Furner made a big save to keep the match alive for the Wildcats.

At 106:21, Chico State's Danielle Leiva split two defenders and sent a pass to Walker, who found space towards the corner of the goal box. Walker chipped the ball up and over Sciacqua's head from 15 yards out to seal the sudden-victory for the Wildcats.

Chico State held the 14-7 advantage in shots, led by four off the foot of Webster. Sonoma State fired just two shots in the final 84 minutes of the match.

Sonoma State will again look for its first win of 2011 when it hosts Humboldt State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in Rohnert Park.
