BOX SCORE Sonoma State 1, Cal State East Bay 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State withstood a late Cal State East Bay barrage, turning
Michel Arroyo's first half goal into a game-winner, as the Seawolves snapped a four-game winless skid with a 1-0 victory over the Pioneers in CCAA men's soccer action on Thursday. Junior goalkeeper
Beau Diaz came up big, preserving the win with a huge save in the waning moments as the Seawolves improve to 6-4-2, 5-3-2 CCAA. The Pioneers, despite out-shooting the Seawolves, fall to 2-7-3, 1-6-3 CCAA.
For Sonoma, the win completes a season sweep of Cal State East Bay for. They also shut out the Pioneers 1-0 in Hayward in September and have now won six straight in the series and 12 of the last 13, dating back to 1994.
Despite owning just one conference victory in 2012, the Pioneers came out strong on Thursday, leading the shot count in the first half, 7-5. It was the Seawolves, however, that broke through first. Following a corner kick by
Brian Angel that bounced around in the box,
Michel Arroyo pounced and then legged it home, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season.
The Seawolves would do a nice job defensively for most of the second half, holding the Pioneers to just one shot attempt in the first 42 minutes. Those final three minutes, however, would not pass easily.
Cal State East Bay pressured, trying desperately to find the equalizing goal. In the 88th minute, a point blank blast from Carlos Barboza was shielded from the goal by Diaz and frantically cleared by the Sonoma defense. Barboza had two more opportunities in the final two minutes, but one went high and the other was blocked, allowing the Seawolves to escape with a much-needed win.
Thursday's clean sheet was the fifth of the season for Diaz, a transfer from Fresno City College.
With 17 points in conference play, the Seawolves currently stand in second place, one back of Chico State (18). The Wildcats, however, have one game in hand with their weekend slate due to start tomorrow. Cal State Stanislaus lurks in third at 14 points, though the Warriors have played two games fewer than the Seawolves. The top two teams from the CCAA's North Division will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament, to be played November 2nd and 4th in Carson.
The Seawolves return to the pitch on Saturday when they host Cal State Monterey Bay. The game will be the centerpiece of Sonoma State's Homecoming festivities. Kickoff is set for 11:30, with Homecoming events starting in the hour before the game.
