BOX SCORE #12 Sonoma State 4, Cal State East Bay 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Cara Curtin scored her team-leading 11th and 12 goals of the season, while
Gretel Amman and
Ashley Martin contributed one goal each, helping the 12th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team to a convincing 4-0 victory over visiting Cal State East Bay on Thursday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field. It was the fifth straight shutout earned by the Seawolves (11-1-1, 8-1-1 CCAA) as the Pioneers fall to 4-7-1 overall and 2-7-1 in conference play.
Alexis Sciacqua, the reigning CCAA Women's Soccer Player of the Week, faced just four Cal State East Bay shots in the match, making one save on the only attempt on target. She and the rest of the Seawolf backline has now held an opponent scoreless in the last 500 minutes, 17 seconds -- the last goal scored by an opposing team was 18 days ago (on Sept. 23).
It was all Sonoma State from the get-go, as Amman gave the home team a 1-0 lead at 19:14 with an incredible shot from 30 yards out that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for her first goal of the season and of her two-year career at SSU. A little more than five minutes later at 24:52, Curtin struck for the Seawolves' second goal of the day on a shot into the left side of the net from 18 yards out after a lead pass from
Margi Osmundson.
Curtin would find the net once more, this time at the 52:42 mark of the second half after rebounding a
Sara Studer shot that hit off the crossbar and back into play, giving SSU a 3-0 lead. The Seawolves wouldn't stop there. At 77:58, Martin put the hosts up 4-0 after corraling a pass from
Megan Foy, then blasting the ball into the back of the net.
When the dust settled, Sonoma State would hold the advantage in shots (14-4), shots on goal (7-1) and corner kicks (1-0), all adding up to another Seawolf victory, extending their unbeaten streak to five games.
Sonoma State will play its final home conference match this Saturday (Oct. 13) against Cal State Monterey Bay at 2:00 p.m. before heading to Southern California next weekend to play Cal State Dominguez Hills (Oct. 19) and Cal State L.A. (Oct. 21). After the short trip south, the Seawolves will return home to play their final home match of the season in a non-conference matchup with Humboldt State on Oct. 26.
