BOX SCORE Cal State L.A. 2, Sonoma State 1 -- Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- Brian Angel knotted the match at 1-1 in the 67th minute, successfully converting a penalty kick after being taken down in the box, but Cal State L.A.'s Antti Arvola would score his second goal of the afternoon in the 79th minute, which held up to be the game-winner as the Sonoma State men's soccer team fell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The Seawolves, who have been eliminated from California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship contention, fall below .500 at 6-7-2 overall and 5-6-2 in conference play. The Golden Eagles (10-3-2, 9-2-2 CCAA) extended their current unbeaten streak to five matches and are now 9-1-1 in their last 11 contests, reclaiming first place in the South Division standings.
"We played very well and never quit," SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "We had the majority of ball possession, but we needed to finish our opportunities and keep the ball out of the net on the defensive end."
Cal State L.A. came out on the offensive right from the get-go, outshooting Sonoma State 6-0 before SSU attempted its first shot 40 minutes into the match. Prior to the 40:17 mark in which
Anders Perez sailed a shot wide of the net, Arvola would put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 at 19:35 on an attempt that slammed the inside of the post and bounced into the net. The Seawolves would find themselves with a couple of chances late in the half, but the halftime buzzer would sound before they could erase the one-goal deficit.
Sonoma State would continue to put pressure on the Cal State L.A. backline and on a surge into the penalty box at the 66:05 mark, Angel was fouled in the box and was subsequently awarded a penalty kick in which he buried in the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
"Brian (Angel) played very well," Ziemer added. "We moved him into midfield and he worked his butt off. He got taken down in the (penalty) box to earn a PK, then stepped up and scored it."
The Seawolves would continue their offensive pressure, but the Golden Eagles broke through at 78:05 for the go-ahead score, again off the foot of Arvola. SSU eventually evened the shots at 10-10 between the two squads, thanks to a 7-3 advantage in the second half, but its two final attempts in the waning moments would sail high and wide, allowing CSULA to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
"This has been the story of our season," said Ziemer. "We outplay teams for long periods, but give up goals against the run of play. We have been in every game and have lost all but one (match) by a single goal. We used our bench a lot today and made a run for it in the second half, but Friday's game (at Cal State Dominguez Hills) took a lot out of us, so I was proud of how we pushed and fought to the end."
Beau Diaz made three saves in the match, while his counterpart, CSULA's Waleed Cassis, made one stop.
Brenton Frame came off the bench to fire a team-high three shots, Angel added two, including his successful PK early in the second half.
Sonoma State will return home on Wednesday for its 2012 home finale when it hosts Menlo College in a non-conference matchup, kicking off at 3:00 p.m. It will also serve as Senior Day, as four SSU seniors --
Frank Becerril,
Cory Taufer,
Brian Angel and
Jomed Tejan -- will be honored in a pre-match ceremony for their outstanding career in the Seawolf uniform.
