BOX SCORE Sonoma State 8, Humboldt State 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Junior
Lauren Fryer recorded her first career hat trick and senior
Macy Usher added two scores, helping the Sonoma State women's soccer team blowout visiting Humboldt State, 8-0, on Senior Day at the Seawolf Soccer Field. The Seawolves (14-2-1) scored the most goals and had the largest margin of victory since the team earned an 11-0 win over Cal State Hayward (now East Bay) on Oct. 5, 1996. The Lumberjacks have lost nine straight matches, falling to 1-12-0 this season.
Seniors
Sara Studer,
Ashley Martin and junior
JJ McFarlin also scored for Sonoma State, which has now outscored its opponents 42-9 this season. Senior
Alexis Sciacqua notched her CCAA-leading 11th shutout of the season, making two saves on Friday.
It took just 5:53 for the Seawolves to put the first of eight goals into the net and it was one of the eight SSU seniors to do it. Martin corralled a pass from fellow senior
Bree Robles and fired a bending shot from 25 yards out that snuck just inside the crossbar and right post for the 1-0 lead early. At 28:12, senior
Macy Usher put one into the net after passes from junior
Cara Curtin and senior
Elena Catania preceeded Usher's chip shot into the left side of the net. Then, at 44:09, Fryer came through after a free kick off the foot of
Shayla Mellenthin that Fryer buried into the net for a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The scoring barage was just getting started, though, as Usher netted her second goal of the game (and the seventh of her career) at the 54:29 mark when
Ashley Martin banged a shot off of the shins of Humboldt State goalkeeper Amber Woolcock and landed at the feet of Usher, who sent it home for the 4-0 advantage. Fryer connected on her second goal of the day at 76:05, then just three minutes later, she completed the hat trick with a goal at 79:07 to put the Seawolves up 6-0. Another three minutes later at 82:34, Studer joined the scoring party when she buried a deep shot into the top left corner of the net before McFarlin scored the eighth and final goal of the afternoon at the 85:06 mark.
When the dust settled, Sonoma State held a 30-4 advantage in shots, including 19-3 in the second half alone. Sciacqua made saves on two of the four Humboldt State shots that were on target, the other two HSU shots sailed wide.
For Humboldt State, Woolcock made six saves, but allowed four goals before being replaced late in the second half by Kelly Lucas, who also gave up four goals, all within a nine-minute span.
Sonoma State will head into its final regular season match with a one-point lead over Cal State Stanislaus, the Seawolves' next opponent for the CCAA North Division crown. Sunday's match at 11:30 a.m. in Turlock will be played for the division title.
