HAYWARD, Calif. --
Despite holding a 19-14 advantage in shots, the Sonoma State men's soccer team was unable to find the net and a goal by Cal State East Bay's Rey Suarez early in the second half proved to be the difference as the Seawolves (8-8-2) see their season come to an end with a 1-0 non-conference loss to the Pioneers (5-8-5) on Tuesday evening in Hayward.

Led by four shots from Jomed Tejan and four more from Aaron Glover, the Seawolves outshot the Pioneers in each half (8-6 and 11-8), but CSUEB goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer came up big, stopping eight SSU shots that were on target throughout the match.  Sonoma State also had the edge in corner kicks, 9-4, including 7-3 in the final 45 minutes, but nothing would come of it.

After a scoreless first half, Suarez put one into the net just 1:47 after the second half kickoff to give Cal State East Bay the 1-0 lead.  The Pioneers would continue to pepper the Seawolf backline and SSU netminder Sean Taufer a couple more times, but the momentum would begin to shift in favor of Sonoma towards the end of regulation.  The Seawolves would take five corner kicks and six shots in the final 18 minutes, but the Pioneers held strong to keep the visitors out of the net.

"It was a tough game, we generated a lot of very good chances, especially after they scored their goal," SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer said.  "But, we have a lot of injuries, so it was a good chance for us to get some of our younger guys to play a lot of minutes," Ziemer added.

"Brian Angel and Jomed Tejan battled today," said Ziemer.  "Thanks to the seniors -- Angel, Tejan, Cory Taufer and Frank Becerril -- for their contributions to the program.  We will miss them."

Sonoma State missed postseason play for the second straight year, finishing third in the CCAA North Division standings with a 6-6-2 mark.
