Curtin's Second Half Goals Propel #7 Sonoma Into CCAA Final

Junior Cara Curtin fights off a Cal Poly Pomona defender during Friday's CCAA semifinal in Carson.

CARSON, Calif. --
Cara Curtin scored a pair of second-half goals to slingshot the Sonoma State women's soccer team into Sunday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship game with a 4-2 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the tournament semifinal on Friday at Toro Stadium in Carson.  Margi Osmundson and Ashley Martin also scored against the Broncos (10-5-3), helping the seventh-ranked and top-seeded Seawolves to rise to 16-2-1 this season.

It is the first CCAA tournament win for Sonoma State since 2000, and just the second win overall for SSU in the history of the conference's postseason event.  The Seawolves move on to face No. 3 seed UC San Diego, which is ranked at No. 13 in this week's NSCAA national poll.  SSU and UCSD played each other once this season, ending in a scoreless tie back on Oct. 5 in Rohnert Park.  In 17 all-time meetings, the Seawolves have yet to beat the Tritons (0-15-2).

Cal Poly Pomona, which saw its 11-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday, got off to a quick start, taking the game's first four shots.  The fourth shot would find the net, putting the Broncos up 1-0 at the 10:35 mark.  As it has done all season, Sonoma State responded.  And quickly.  Just over three minutes later at 13:49, Osmundson connected on a one-touch attempt at point-blank range to knot the score at 1-1.

The offensive momentum continued to sway back and forth throughout the first half.  The Broncos took two corner kicks and three shots after the Seawolves scored the equalizer, but then SSU followed with four consecutive shots of its own.  The fourth shot would find the net after a Sara Studer corner kick found Martin in the box where Martin collected possession of the ball and rifled a shot into the right corner of the net at 33:02 to put Sonoma up 2-1.

The see-saw battle continued into the second half, but the Seawolves would breakthrough at 61:48 when Curtin used her speed to beat a defender to a ball before chipping it up and over Bronco goalkeeper Sarah Rohman for the 3-1 lead.

At 78:31, Cal Poly Pomona cut its deficit to one goal on a score by Alison Sauve, but Curtin answered right back three minutes later on a 20-yard bomb to give Sonoma State the 4-2 advantage with 8:30 left in regulation.

It became a defensive battle the rest of the way as only shot was taken by either team, and it would be CPP's Angela Garcia to do so, but SSU netminder Alexis Sciacqua came up with her sixth and final save of the day to secure the Seawolves' 4-2 win.

The Broncos held a narrow margin in shots (15-14) and corner kicks (5-2), but Sciacqua and the Seawolf defense came up big again on Friday.

Sunday's championship match will again take place at Toro Stadium in Carson; kickoff between Sonoma State and UC San Diego is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
