Seawolves Earn Fourth Straight Win With Two On Saturday

Jimmy Manning won all of his matches on Saturday in Colorado, helping the Seawolves to a pair of wins.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Sonoma State men's tennis team continued its hot streak, improving to 3-0 on its trip to Colorado this weekend with a 6-3 win over Augustana (SD) and a 7-2 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.  The Seawolves, who are ranked at No. 45 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/NCAA Division II Poll, rises to 6-8 overall and 5-3 against Division II opponents this season.

The duo of Jimmy Manning/Drexler Dy rolled to an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, but it would be the only doubles point earned by Sonoma State to start the match against Augustana on Saturday morning.  However, Drexler Dy, Greg Eckstedt, Garret Gooch and Jimmy Manning grabbed singles victories in straight sets to clinch the match win for SSU.  Seth Hein battled back and forth with his opponent at No. 6 singles, but eventually pulled through with a thrilling 7-5, 7-6 (10-5) triumph for the sixth Seawolf point and the 6-3 win.

Just hours later, Sonoma State battled back and forth to earn a hard-fought, 7-2 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday afternoon.  The Seawolves would take the 2-1 lead after doubles play, which included a win by default, due to an injury to a CSUP player earlier in the day.

Then, with wins at No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles, the Seawolves clinched their fourth straight win; all four singles wins came in straight sets, two of which took 10-point tiebreakers to decide the second set -- Daniel Henke (6-2, 5-7 (10-8)) at No. 3 and Garret Gooch (7-6 (10-4), 6-3) at No. 5.  Dy and Eckstedt won by identical scores of 6-3, 6-4 and No. 6 singles was won by default, due to the aforementioned injury by one of the CSUP players.

Sonoma State will look to go undefeated in Colorado when it wraps up the trip on Sunday against host Colorado Mesa at 9:00 a.m.
