ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Taylor Varnadore netted his league-high fifth goal of the year and Brenton Frame added a bit of insurance on Friday afternoon as Sonoma State defeated rival San Francisco State 2-0 in CCAA men's soccer action at Seawolf Field.  Varnadore broke open a scoreless tie midway through the second half, propelling the Seawolves to their third straight win and preserving their perfect mark in conference play.  The Seawolves see their record bump to 4-1-0, 3-0-0 CCAA while the Gators drop to 0-4-1, 0-2-1 CCAA.

After playing four games on the road to open the regular season, the Seawolves played in front of the home crowd for the first time in 2012.  It marked the fifth straight year the Seawolves have won their home opener and they are now 11-0-1 in home openers dating back to 2001.

Despite out-shooting the Gators 9-3 in the first half, the Seawolves would have to settle for a scoreless tie at the break.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, "We were a little unlucky not to go ahead in the first half.  We hit the cross bar and the post and we kept SF State in the game."

San Francisco State came out strong in the second half, keeping the pressure on Sonoma before the Seawolves finally broke through at the 64-minute mark on a goal from Varnadore.  The junior from Sebastopol muscled his way through the SF State defense and punched the ball to the left of the keeper, prompting Ziemer to call Varnadore "an absolute beast" in his post-game wrap.

With a one-goal lead, the Seawolves had the opportunity to use their bench a lot, displaying their impressive depth.  In all, 21 Seawolves saw the field on Friday afternoon.  Said Ziemer, "Playing just about everybody but our back-up keeper will help keep us fresh for Sunday."

With seven minutes to go, Brenton Frame took a pass from Varnadore and sent a shot into the net from the top of the box.  It was the third goal of the season for Frame, in limited playing time.  Coach Ziemer was as impressed with Frame's nose for the goal as anyone, remarking, "as well as he's playing, it's going to be tough to keep him off the field!".

Beau Diaz recorded his third shutout of the season, making one brilliant save that preserved the clean sheet.

Sonoma State led the shot count, 15-9, and had an 18-12 edge in fouls called against them.  Corners were even at five apiece.

The Seawolves will now turn their sights to Cal Poly Pomona.  The Broncos visit Seawolf Field on Sunday, with kickoff set for 11:30 am.
