BOX SCORE #6 Sonoma State 5, Cal Poly Pomona 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's soccer team once again proved on Sunday afternoon that its rank of No. 6 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 Poll is no fluke. With two goals by
JJ McFarlin and one scored by
Lauren Fryer and
Ashley Martin, in addition to an own goal, the Seawolves flexed their muscles and blew away Cal Poly Pomona (2-3-0, 1-3-0 CCAA), 5-0, to remain undefeated this season at 6-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the CCAA.
Perfect through its first six matches of the season, Sonoma State is off to its second-best start in school history. In those matches, the Seawolves have outscored their opponents, 20-3, including a 13-0 margin in first half action -- SSU has yet to trail in a match thus far.
It is the second straight shutout win for Sonoma State and goalkeeper
Alexis Sciacqua, who made one save on Sunday to improve to 19-15-7 with 13 shutouts in her career as the keeper of record at SSU. After the Seawolf defense didn't even allow a shot in the first half, the Broncos came out and fired eight shots at Sciacqua and crew in the second period, but none would find the net.
Meanwhile, the Sonoma State offense put on another offensive showcase. In fact, the Seawolves didn't even have to score their first goal with any of their own players on the field. At 25:56, a Cal Poly Pomona defender attempted to clear a corner kick taken by
Bree Robles, but the ball would glance off the defender's head and bounce the opposite direction and into the mouth of the goal for the 1-0 SSU lead.
A little over 10 minutes later, McFarlin would net a true goal for the hosts after taking a pass from Fryer and slotting it past CPP netminder Sarah Rohman for the 2-0 lead. McFarlin wasn't done. At 43:54, she struck again. This time, she fired a shot right at Rohman, but the power of the shot enabled the ball to slip right through Rohman's hands and into the net, putting the Seawolves up 3-0.
In the second half, Fryer continued to pour it on for SSU, netting a goal at 63:36 on an assist by
Alesha Laranjo. Less than two minutes later, the Seawolves converted again, this time it was Martin to join the scoring party, heading a pass from Fryer and into the net, giving SSU the large 5-0 advantage. It would be the last goal scored in the match, but Sonoma State wouldn't let off the pressure. When all was said and done, the Seawolves outshot the Broncos, 17-8, including 11-0 in the first 45 minutes, and took one more corner kick than the visitors (4-3).
McFarlin led all players with four shot attempts, followed by three shots apiece from Martin, Fryer,
Elena Catania and
Sara Studer. Fryer had an outstanding afternoon with the aforementioned goal and two assists.
For Cal Poly Pomona, Alison Sauve and Aneska Alino fired two shots each to lead the Broncos' attack. Alex Abbott, who entered for Rohman as a goalkeeper at the start of the second half, made two saves -- Rohman made one.
With two of the teams in last week's NSCAA Division II Top 25 poll losing this weekend and two other teams forced into a draw, Sonoma State might have a shot at breaking into the Top Five when the national poll is released on Tuesday. The Seawolves will host rival Chico State (4-2-0, 2-2-0 CCAA) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. before welcoming Cal State Stanislaus (5-1-0, 3-1-0 CCAA) into town on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in a potential matchup of two nationally-ranked teams (Cal State Stanislaus was receiving votes in last week's NSCAA poll).
