BOX SCORE #21 Cal State Stanislaus 4, #2 Sonoma State 1 -- Box Score

ROHNERT PARK --
Sonoma State held a slight advantage in shots during the match and Alesha Laranjo scored her first goal of the season, but Cal State Stanislaus got three goals from Karenee Demery and another on a penalty kick in the second half as the 21st-ranked Warriors (7-1-0, 4-1-0 CCAA) upset the second-ranked Seawolves, 4-1, on Sunday in Rohnert Park.  SSU suffered its first loss of the season and falls to 7-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in conference play, but remains atop the North Division standings over CSUS by three points.

Demery, a two-time All-American and the CCAA's leader in goals scored this season, found herself in behind the Seawolf defense all day.  Her first of three goals would come in the 21st minute on a 1-on-1 with SSU goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua after an entry pass by Bernie Bettencourt split the defense.  In the 42nd minute, Demery again found the net with a header in the box following a Sonoma State foul and a free kick by Emily Relles; it put Cal State Stanislaus in the driver's seat with a two-goal lead at halftime.

Just under four minutes into the second half, Demery solidified her hat trick on another breakaway, beating Sciacqua to the right side of the net for the 3-0 Warrior lead.  Cal State Stanislaus would then seemingly put the game out of reach when Sonoma State would be called for a foul in their own penalty box.  The ensuing penalty kick by the Warriors' Bettencourt would find the upper right corner of the net to go up 4-0.

The Seawolves would get a goal back in the 65th minute when Laranjo took a free kick from 20 yards out, which hit the crossbar, but bounced across the goal line and into the net.  Despite a 9-6 shot advantage in the second half, Sonoma State couldn't convert and would eventually suffer the 4-1 blowout loss at home.  SSU led 14-12 in shots in the match and a 9-4 lead in corner kicks, but couldn't overcome the three-goal effort by Demery.

Sciacqua made four saves in the contest, as did her counterpart, Millie Brown, from Cal State Stanislaus.

Sonoma State will hit the road for a pair of games, beginning with a non-conference matchup at Humboldt State on Friday in Arcata.  The Seawolves will then play at Chico State next Sunday (Sept. 30) before returning back home for four more matches over a two week span.
