BOX SCORE Sonoma State 3, Cal State Monterey Bay 3 (F/2OT) -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Scoring three unanswered goals to overcome an early 2-0 deficit, the Sonoma State men's soccer team was just three minutes away from recapturing the top spot in the CCAA North Division, but Cal State Monterey Bay scored the equalizer with a man advantage in the 88th minute -- due to an SSU red card with 20 minutes left in regulation -- and neither team could break the tie in overtime, resulting in a 3-3 decision on Friday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
The Seawolves (4-4-3, 3-4-2 CCAA) remain three points behind the division-leading Otters (6-3-2, 4-3-2 CCAA) with seven conference games remaining, five of which will be away games for SSU.
At the 9:29 mark, Cal State Monterey Bay's Max Madrigal put his team up 1-0 on an unassisted goal from 10 yards out. Nearly 20 minutes later, Alberto Anguiano added to the Otter lead at 30:11 when he got in behind the Seawolf defense near the endline on the right side and poked a shot past SSU keeper
Beau Diaz for the 2-0 advantage.
At 40:05,
Evan Filipczyk lofted a pass into the goal box where a CSUMB defender tried to clear with a header, but the ball would bounce the Seawolves' way and land in behind Otter netminder Evan Drake where Varnadore came streaking in to finish into the back of the net, cutting the SSU deficit in half at 2-1.
It took just 30 seconds into the second half for Varnadore to strike again and even the score.
Dylan Stafford served a ball into the box and Varnadore was there to redirect the ball into the net at 45:30 for the senior's third goal of the season.
Just over three minutes had passed when Sonoma State went on a breakaway into Cal State Monterey Bay territory, but an Otter defender came sliding in from behind to stop the scoring chance, which resulted in a penalty kick for SSU.
Nico Spann would step up and convert the free kick at 48:47 to give the Seawolves a 3-2 lead.
However, at 69:02, during a play at midfield, Stafford came sliding in with his cleats up towards an Otter player with possession of the ball and he was issued a straight red card and ejected from the game. As a result, Sonoma State was forced to play a man down the rest of the way.
The Seawolves held their own and when it looked as if they would hold on for the win, the Otters had other plans. At 87:03, Anthony Velazquez netted a pass from Madrigal to even the score at 3-3, sending the match to overtime.
In the overtime period, Cal State Monterey Bay held a slight 3-1 advantage in shots, but none of the four combined shots by either team would prove to be the game-winner and the game would end in a 3-3 tie.
The Otters outshot the Seawolves 19-13 in the match, forcing Diaz to make six saves between the posts for SSU. Drake made three stops on the other end of the field for CSUMB.
Sonoma State returns to action on Sunday when it hosts San Francisco State at 11:30 am at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
