ROHNERT PARK --
Taylor Varnadore broke a scoreless tie in the 74th minute and that's all the Sonoma State men's soccer team needed to defeat visiting San Francisco State on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field.  The 1-0 victory helped the Seawolves, who wore pink jerseys donated by Puma to raise awareness in finding a cure for cancer -- and to honor Lori Maycock, the late mother of former SSU student-athlete and assistant coach Tim Maycock -- improve to 5-4-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the CCAA.  The Gators, meanwhile, fell to 3-8-1 (2-7-1 CCAA).

"That was a good win," SSU head men's soccer coach Marcus Ziemer said.  "We knew that SF State was going to bounce back after their tough loss on Friday (5-0 at Humboldt State)."

The Seawolves controlled every aspect of the game on Sunday.  Although the match would be scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, Sonoma held an 11-2 shot advantage (and 17-8 for the game).  However, it wasn't until 73:55 when a cross by Nico Spann ricocheted off of Gator goalkeeper Colt Reichl and right to Varnadore, who turned around and poked it into the net before Reichl could recover.  Varnadore attempted eight of the Seawolves' 17 shots.

"It's good to get Varnadore hot at the right time of the season," added Ziemer.  "Our defense also played very well.  Another shutout for Beau Diaz,  while Daniel Theobald and Trevor Tennant worked great together at center back."

It was Diaz's sixth shutout of the season, and the 11th of his career.  He didn't have to make any saves as all eight SF State shots were off target.  Reichl made three stops for the Gators on the other end of the pitch.

Ziemer finished by saying, "We will enjoy this one tonight and then get ready for Chico on Friday,"

On Sunday, the Sonoma State men's and women's soccer teams joined together to raise awareness in finding a cure for cancer and, thanks to a generous donation by Puma, the SSU men's soccer team donned pink jerseys during the match against San Francisco State.

The team has also created the Lori Maycock Endowment in honor of the mother of former SSU student-athlete and assistant coach, Tim Maycock.  After battling ovarian cancer for four years, Lori passed away in July of 2006.  The Seawolves are encouraging donations for the endowment fund created in Lori's name and information on how you can support this cause can be found by clicking here.

Sonoma State will now play five of its final six regular season games on the road, beginning with a Friday evening matchup at archrival Chico State.  Kickoff from the University Soccer Field in Chico is set for 4:30 pm.
