BOX SCORE Sonoma State 1, #25 Chico State 1 (F/2OT) -- Box Score
CHICO, Calif. -- Down 1-0 with 3:01 left on the clock in regulation,
Aaron Glover faked a defender, dribbled right on by him, then blasted a shot from 10 yards out to knot the match at 1-1 and force overtime, but neither team could score the golden goal in the extra 20 minutes as Sonoma State earned a tie with No. 25 Chico State on Friday evening in Chico.
The Seawolves (5-4-4, 4-4-3 CCAA) move to within two points of CCAA North Division-leading Cal State Monterey Bay after the Otters lost to Cal State Stanislaus in double overtime Friday afternoon. The CCAA South Division-leading Wildcats, ties for the first time this season, moving to 10-2-1 and 8-2-1 in conference play.
"We showed a lot of character to come back and get the equalizer," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "Chico is a very good team so that is a great result, especially on the road."
Both teams were held scoreless in the opening period of play, but Chico State would hold the advantage in shots, attempting five while holding Sonoma State to just one -- a shot off the foot of
Daniel Theobald in the ninth minute.
In the second half, the Wildcats didn't waste much time to separate themselves from the Seawolves as Justin Saul served a corner kick into the box where Octavio Guzman headed it home for the 1-0 lead at 51:40. It looked as if that's how the game would end; Chico State continued to outshoot Sonoma State, a 10-3 margin with just five minutes left in the contest.
That's when Glover stepped up. He took a pass from
Zanin Mahic and tore past the Chico backline, only to beat Wildcat keeper Sam Evans to the back of the net for the game-tying score. The Seawolves weren't done yet, however. With the PA announcer counting down the seconds from 10,
Sean Callahan took a corner kick and the ensuing header by Mahic sailed wide, forcing both teams to decide the match in overtime.
In the first extra period, both teams attempted a shot, but both were blocked. Chico State picked up the intensity in the second overtime and took all three shots recorded in the final 10 minutes, but to no avail as Sonoma State held on for a desirable result in the 1-1 tie.
Beau Diaz made four saves in the game, including one stop in the second overtime. His counterpart, Evans, made one save which came in the first half.
"Beau made a couple of great saves to keep us within striking distance," said Ziemer.
"We are just focusing on our next opponent and let the other games take care of themselves," Ziemer added. "We are going to regroup and then take get ready for (Cal State) San Bernadino on Sunday."
Sonoma State will now make a 525-mile trip south to face Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at Premier Field in San Bernardino for a kickoff scheduled at 11:30 am. The Seawolves then return home next Friday for their final home game of the 2013 season, a 3:00 pm matchup with Humboldt State.
