BOX SCORE Sonoma State 1, Cal State San Bernardino 0 -- Box Score
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Taylor Varnadore scored his fifth goal of the season midway through the first half and
Beau Diaz made five saves on the day to help the Sonoma State men's soccer team remain in contention for a playoff spot with a narrow 1-0 victory at Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at Premier Field.
Unbeaten in their last four games, the Seawolves improve to 6-4-4 overall and 5-4-3 in the CCAA, remaining two points behind CCAA North Division-leader Cal State Monterey Bay (7-4-2, 6-4-2 CCAA), which pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory at home against Cal State East Bay on Sunday. The Coyotes fall to 4-9-3 and 2-9-1 in conference play.
"We worked hard for that one," SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "(Cal State) San Bernadino is much better than their record. It was tough with the heat and the travel so we subbed a lot, our depth was key. We did a good job finishing off the game today."
The teams would go shot-for-shot almost the entire 90 minutes on Sunday. Cal State Stan Bernardino held the 14-11 advantage in shots for the match, but until the Coyotes attempted their 14th and final shot of the day at the 89:09 mark, no team would have more than two shots than the other. Both teams had six shots each in the first 45 minutes, but CSUSB led 8-5 in that category in the final half.
The Seawolves' fourth shot attempt of the day was the only shot by either team to find the net, it was a header by Varnadore after passes from
Sean Callahan and
Daniel Theobald found the senior near the mouth of the goal. It would hold up to be the game-winner as neither team scored again.
Diaz made five saves between the posts, four of which came in the second half. It was his seventh shutout of the season and the 12th of his career. Diaz's counterpart, Cal State San Bernardino's Jeff Salt, made two stops on Sunday.
"Our defense played great," added Ziemer. "
Trevor Tennant has been playing really well and he works well with
Dylan Stafford. Outside backs
Ryan Rohane and (Daniel) Theobald also played well."
With four games left in the regular season, Sonoma State returns home on Friday for its final home contest of the 2013 campaign. The Seawolves will host Humboldt State at 3:00 pm following Senior Day festivities just prior to kickoff.
