ROHNERT PARK, Calif.  --  Riding high after a 3-2 win over UC San Diego last weekend, the Sonoma State women's soccer team saw the tables turned as Cal State L.A. came into Seawolf Field on Friday and escaped with a 3-2 win.  Melissa Lafranchi scored twice, running her tally to three goals in the last two games, but it wouldn't be enough as the Seawolves tasted defeat for the first time in 2013.  Sonoma goes to 6-1-2, 4-1-2 CCAA while CSULA goes to 4-4-1, 2-4-1 CCAA.

The Seawolves outshot the Golden Eagles 7-4 in the first half, a trend they would continue throughout the game, but they had a hard time finding the net.  Cal State L.A.'s Yi Du had four saves in the first half to help keep the game scoreless until her Golden Eagles lit up the scoreboard in the 41st minute.  It was Andrea Lammers scoring on a header off a cross from Veronika Steen to put the visitors in front.

Sonoma would be quick to answer, though, striking back just three minutes later when Lafranchi fired a laser through the posts from 25 yards out.  The teams would hit the break deadlocked at one.

As they did in the first, Cal State L.A. broke open the second half ledger when Amalia Arvidsson gathered a loose ball off the cross bar and banged it home.  When Norie Pablo scored on a counter just two and a half minutes later, the Seawolves found themselves in a 3-1 hole.

While they had some decent looks, Cal State L.A. did a nice job smothering Sonoma's advances late in the game.  The Seawolves would finally break through when Lafranchi poked the ball through a crowd for a goal in the 79th minute.

A frenzied effort by Sonoma in the game's final ten minutes came up empty as Cal State L.A. was able to waste away the clock.

After not scoring in her first 23 collegiate games, Lafranchi, a sophomore from Torrance, has scored three times in the last two.  She had a goal in the win over UCSD and is now tied for fourth on the team with three goals.

The loss was Sonoma State's first conference defeat since October 19, 2012, and their first home conference loss in over a year.

They'll have to make a quick recovery, however, as Cal State Dominguez Hills comes to town on Sunday.  The Toros were a big 7-0 winner over Humboldt State on Friday afternoon. Kickoff on Sunday is slated for 11:30 am.
