BOX SCORE Cal State Dominguez Hills 5, Sonoma State 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Despite holding a 20-14 shot advantage and a 8-0 edge in corner kicks, the Sonoma State men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field. With the loss, the Seawolves (4-4-2, 3-4-1 CCAA) fall to second place in the CCAA North Division standings, three points behind Cal State Monterey Bay. The Toros snap a two-match losing streak and improve to 6-2-2 and 4-2-2 in the conference.
"That was obviously a tough one," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "They have a very good team, but we started very well and should have had a couple of goals in the first 20 minutes."
"How we respond (next week) will show what we are made of," added Ziemer. "We have an opportunity to turn our season around on Friday (at home) against Cal State Monterey Bay."
While both teams fired nine shots each in the opening half, it was Cal State Dominguez Hills that held a 2-0 lead at the half, thanks to a pair of goals within four minutes of each other. The first came at 32:38 by Sebastian Cortez, followed by a superman-like header by Jio Santana at 36:31 for the two-goal lead.
The Seawolves controlled possession for much of the second half, but the Toros took advantage of their chances and quickly added two more goals to lead 4-0 with just over 28 minutes left in regulation. While SSU outshot CSUDH 11-5 in the second half, only three would be on target, but Toro netminder Trey Mitchell made stops on all three. The fifth and final goal by the visitors came at the 86:47 mark when Sonoma State took down a defender in the box, allowing Tim Harty to step up and convert the ensuing penalty kick.
Brenton Frame accounted for four of SSU's 20 shots in the match, followed by three off the foot of
Nico Spann.
Beau Diaz made two saves before giving way to
Joe Crisp for the final eight minutes.
Sonoma State will continue its homestand on Friday when it plays host to North Division-leader Cal State Monterey Bay as part of the university's Homecoming festivities. Kickoff between the Seawolves and Otters is set for 1:30 pm at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
