"We got the win, but it was a bit more interesting in the second half than it I had to be," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "You have to give Humboldt (State) credit. They never quit. They are well coached and will be even tougher next year."
The Seawolves had their way in the first half where
Aaron Glover started the scoring by himself. At 15:43, Glover took the ball from the left corner, went around one HSU defender and sent the ball low from 20 yards into the net. 10 minutes later,
Taylor Varnadore and
Nico Spann set up
Zanin Mahic for his first goal of the season before
Raspreet Sandhu scored what would be a vital insurance goal in the 42nd minute with assists by
Kelly Davila and
Dylan Stafford.
With a 3-0 lead at halftime, Sonoma State also held a 12-3 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes.
"The first half was some of the best soccer we've played all year," added Ziemer. "Our ball movement was very sharp and when we lost it we were very sharp in transition to win it back."
It was a much different story in the second half as Humboldt State rallied to score a pair of goals late and almost scored the equalizer with 1:20 left in regulation, but the header attempt sailed just over the crossbar. The Lumberjacks outshot the Seawolves 10-4 in the final 45 minutes, but the SSU defense held strong to win its fifth straight contest.
"We have quite a few players playing their best now and we are peaking as a team at the right part of the season," Ziemer said. "The scare in the second half was a good lesson for us. We've been good at managing the end of games all season, but today, we were a little naive in the last 20 minutes."
SSU keeper
Beau Diaz made five saves in the victory while HSU keeper Ryan Ades made four stops.
Ziemer finished by saying, "We were able to play a lot of players so we will have a good week of preparation and be ready for the CCAA tournament on Friday."
Sonoma State enters the CCAA tournament as the hottest team in the conference. It will be the Seawolves' first appearance in the CCAA tournament since 2010. Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. faced each other once this season, but the teams played to a scoreless draw back on Oct. 4 in Rohnert Park.
