Squarcia's Golden Goal Sends Seawolves Into CCAA Title Match

Gabby Squarcia celebrates her game-winning goal on Friday evening.
BOX SCORE #17 Sonoma State 2, Cal State San Bernardino 1 (2OT) -- Box Score

TURLOCK, Calif. --
Down 1-0 with less than six minutes left in regulation, Margi Osmundson scored the equalizer to force overtime and Gabby Squarcia ended it with just 1:23 remaining in double overtime, lifting the 17th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team into Sunday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Soccer Championship title game with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday evening in Turlock.

The Seawolves improve to 13-3-3 this season and will face top-seeded and fifth-ranked Cal State Stanislaus in the CCAA Tournament Championship game on Sunday at 3:00 pm in Turlock.  The Warriors scored three unanswered goals to come-from-behind and defeat No. 4 seed Cal State L.A., 3-2, in overtime in the other women's semifinal game on Friday.  SSU and CSUS faced each other twice this season -- the teams tied 2-2 in Rohnert Park back on Sept. 20 before Cal State Stanislaus won 1-0 in Turlock on Oct. 27.

Only five shots were attempted by both Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino combined in the first 45 minutes on Friday, two of which came off the foot of CSUSB players; however, one of those two shots found the back of the net.  Carissa Kutkowski took a pass from Emily Mardon and blasted a shot past SSU keeper Allison Hadidian from eight yards out for the early 1-0 lead for the Coyotes.

Down by a goal, Sonoma State came out in the second half and dominated from start to finish, outshooting Cal State L.A. 9-0.  In fact, seven of the nine SSU shots in the second half were attempted in the final 10 minutes.  It wasn't until the 85th minute when Osmundson broke through for the equalizer.  Taking on a defender one-on-one, she broke free and fired a shot from the far corner of the penalty box that snuck between CSUSB keeper Chelsey Jones and the far post, giving SSU new life.

After the game-tying goal, the Seawolves shot three more times, one of which hit the post, another saved by Jones, but the game would have to be decided in overtime.  Both teams took a shot in a relatively uneventful first overtime, but things would heat up in the second extra period.  The Seawolves and Coyotes attempted three shots each.  Two of the three Cal State San Bernardino shots would occur on the tail end of a breakaway by Coyote players, but Hadidian came up huge with saves on each to keep the game tied.

Finally, with just 1:23 left before a winner would have to be decided by penalty kicks, Cara Curtin broke away from the CSUSB defense and sprinted with the ball down the right side of the field and, just before reaching the end line, she passed the ball through the box to Squarcia, who was streaking in towards the far post, only to tap the ball into the net for the game-winner.

The Seawolves outshot the Coyotes 16-6 in the match.  Hadidian made two saves, both of which were game-saving stops in the second overtime.  Her counterpart, Jones, had five saves for CSU San Bernardino.  JJ McFarlin led the SSU offense with four shots, L.Curtin, Osmundson, Taylor Enzler and Squarcia all had two attempts each.

Sonoma State returns to the CCAA Championship Tournament final for the second straight year; the Seawolves tied UC San Diego 1-1 in last year's final, but eventually lost in the shootout.
