Justin Herold added 17, but the Sonoma State men's basketball team suffered a 79-68 loss to visiting Chico State on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves remain winless in conference play at 0-2, dropping to 1-5 overall. The Wildcats improve to 6-1 and 2-1.
Sonoma State got off to a quick start, taking its largest lead of the game at 11 (18-7) at the 13:16 mark of the first half, but Chico State went on a 7-0 run to get within four points just four minutes later, but the Seawolves would hold onto the lead until the 4:06 mark when a three-pointer by the Wildcats' Rashad Parker and Chico would never give up the lead the rest of the way. In fact, with a six-point deficit with 5:41 left in the opening period, Parker scored 11 straight points, including three three-pointers to put the visitors up 35-30 with 3:18 remaining.
In the second half, the Seawolves got to within two points at the 16:17 mark when Herold hit a jumper to put SSU down 45-43, but Chico went on an 8-2 run over the next three minutes and wouldn't let Sonoma get much closer than eight points to secure the 11-point win.
Despite Parker's 11 straight points in the first half, it was Sean Park to lead Chico State in points with 24. Parker ended with 23. Amir Carraway chipped in with 14. As a team, the Wildcats connected on 54.2 percent of their shots (26-48) and was 11 for 28 from three-point land, a 39.3 percent efficiency. Meanwhile, the Seawolves hit on 51.1 percent of their shots, but was 4 of 12 from long range.
Sonoma State will play just two more games in the 2013 calendar year, both against San Francisco State. The Seawolves will visit The Swamp on Dec. 13 at 7:30 pm to tangle with the Gators before a Dec. 22 matchup in Rohnert Park at 4:00 pm. SSU will then continue its 2013-14 schedule on the road at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Jan. 3.
