UC Santa Cruz 8, Sonoma State 1
ROHNERT PARK -- Matt Roberts earned an emotional, come-from-behind victory at No. 1 singles, outlasting his opponent in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker, but the Sonoma State men's tennis team couldn't its rhythm, losing 8-1 to visiting UC Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon at the SSU Tennis Courts. The Seawolves have lost five straight matches, falling to 2-8 this season.
Roberts dropped the first set 6-1 to UC Santa Cruz's Erich Koenig, but came back and forced a tiebreaker after pulling out a 7-6 (6) victory in set number two. In the tiebreaker, the two battled into extra points before Roberts finally grabbed the 16-14 third-set win. It would be the only match that SSU won, as the Banana Slugs claimed victory in all three doubles matches and the rest of the singles matches in straight sets.
Sonoma State will head to Fresno next weekend to scrimmage Fresno CC on Friday (2:00 p.m.) before facing Fresno Pacific on Saturday (10:00 a.m.). The Seawolves' next home match is a scrimmage on Mar. 1 against Grossmont CC.
