BOX SCORE #4 Cal Poly Pomona 68, Sonoma State 60 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State gave fourth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona all they could handle, but it wasn't quite enough as the Broncos pulled away for a 68-60 win on Senior Night at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. Despite leading with under four minutes to go, the Seawolves saw the Broncos go on a 15-5 run down the stretch to take the gameThe Seawolves see their record drop to 10-14, 8-12 CCAA while the Broncos improve to 22-2, 18-2 CCAA and clinch the CCAA regular season title, outright.
Despite the loss, the Seawolves remain a game up on Humboldt State for eighth place in the CCAA standings with two to go. Humboldt lost to San Francisco State on Saturday night. The top eight teams at the conclusion of the regular season will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Prior to the game the Seawolves honored four of their seniors -
Andrew Bolton,
Will Olsem,
Patrick Scott, and
Ryan Stanley.
Saturday night saw the Broncos build up a huge early lead, going up 16-5 after eight and a half minutes of play. A
Will Olsem three-pointer shortly therafter seemed to jumpstart the Seawolves' offense as they went on a 13-2 run to tie the game up just four minutes later.
The teams remained close for the remainder of the first half with Sonoma clinging to a one point lead at the break, 33-32.
The score would stay close for almost the entire second half. Featuring six ties and numerous lead changes, neither team would go up by more than three until a 7-0 run by the Broncos put them up 60-55 with 2:25 to go.
The teams would trade baskets over the next minute and a half before Cal Poly Pomona hit the first of what would end up being six straight free throws in the final 44 seconds to ice the game.
Following a first half that saw them shoot over 52%, the Seawolves' offense cooled off considerably in the second as they hit 9-of-25 shots (36%), including just 2-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The Seawolves got 12 points from
Patrick Scott and nine from both
Will Olsem and
Ryan Stanley.
Jabri Jenkins and
Emmanuel Bradford each had 8 points. Olsem posted a team-high eight rebounds and
Jason Walter dished out four assists.
Mitchel Anderson paced the Broncos with 19 points and seven rebounds.
The Seawolves will close out the regular season next weekend when they travel to UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino. They'll try to clinch their fourth CCAA Tournament berth in the last five years.
