Sonoma State 8, Arizona Christian 1 -- Box Score
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Thanks to a clean sweep in singles, the Sonoma State men's tennis team picked up the first win of their 2013 campaign with an 8-1 defeat of Arizona Christian University at La Camarilla Racquet and Fitness Club in Scottsdale on Thursday afternoon. Following three defeats, all to NCAA Division I programs, the Seawolves had little problem dispatching the undermanned Firestorm as they kick off a busy weekend in the Valley of the Sun.
The Seawolves went up 2-1 after doubles play, due in large part to an 8-3 win by
Matt Roberts and
Robert Henry at No. 1. The Firestorm captured their only point of the match with a win at No. 2 while the point at No. 3 was awarded to Sonoma after a default by ACU. The Firestorm had only five eliglble student-athletes, and therefore, gave up another uncontested point at No. 6 singles.
The Seawolves' No. 1,
Matt Roberts, turned in an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win over Andrew Barnett to lead some strong solo efforts by the visitors.
Drexler Dy (6-4, 6-4) and
Vincent Paganetti (6-0, 6-0) were also straight-set winners at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.
Robert Henry and
David Hutton each needed come-from-behind efforts to claim their points. Henry was victorious by a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 score at No. 2 and Hutton won 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.
The Seawolves improve to 1-3 overall as they head into one of their busiest weekends of the season. They will play four matches over the next three days, culiminating with a battle against 30th-ranked Western New Mexico on Sunday. Next up on the docket is Metro State, on Friday at 9:00 am.
