Hawai'i-Hilo 5, Sonoma State 4
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Sonoma State men's team, which is ranked at No. 8 in the West Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), battled with Hawai'i-Hilo, the ninth-ranked team in the region, but the Vulcans pulled out a narrow 5-4 win in neutral-site tennis action on Sunday at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla. The Seawolves have now lost eight straight matches, falling to 2-11 this season.
Sonoma trailed Hilo 2-1 after doubles play, earning the only point at No. 3 when
Drexler Dy and
Robert Henry cruised to a convincing 8-2 win.
Matt Roberts took both sets off of his opponent, Tom Greer-Smith, at No. 1 singles, but both had to be decided in a tiebreaker.
Ryan Harris took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Michael Davis at No. 4 and
Vincent Paganetti pulled out a win at No. 6 by winning a tiebreaking third set. However, that would be all the Seawolves could muster, falling at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles.
Sonoma State will head to Pueblo, Colo. this weekend to compete in the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves Tennis Classic, beginning with a Friday matchup with Bethany at 11:00 a.m.
