#41 BYU-Hawaii 8, Sonoma State 1
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Seth Hein overcame a tough first-set loss to win the second and ultimately claim the victory in a hard-fought tiebreaker, but it would be the only point earned by the Sonoma State men's tennis team as it dropped an 8-1 decision to BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla. The Seawolves wrap up their road portion of the 2013 schedule, falling to 3-16 overall. The Vulcans, ranked at No. 41 in the ITA Division II rankings this week, improve to 7-2.
While BYU-Hawaii picked up two quick wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, Hein and
Jimmy Manning would put up some resistence against their opponents (Wei-Feng Lee and Dai Peng), but would drop the match, 9-7, allowing BYUH to pull off the sweep in doubles play.
While the Vulcans cruised to three straight-set wins in singles to clinch the match, the Seawolves wouldn't go down without a fight.
Drexler Dy forced a third-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles, but dropped a close 11-9 decision in the extra set.
Vincent Paganetti forced an extra set to decide the opening frame, but Andy Xing grabbed the win for the Vulcans' eighth and final point of the day.
Sonoma State returns home for its final two matches of the season, beginning with a match against No. 12 Fresno Pacific next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves will then finish the 2013 campaign next Sunday, hosting No. 28 UC San Diego.
