BOX SCORE Cal State Monterey Bay 1, Sonoma State 0 -- Box Score
SEASIDE, Calif. -- Despite holding an 11-1 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes and playing with an extra man for the final 12 minutes, Sonoma State couldn't overcome a Cal State Monterey Bay goal early in the match in Sunday's 1-0 loss in Seaside, Calif. The Seawolves (2-1-1, 1-1-0 CCAA) peppered Otter netminder Evan Drake with 15 total shots, but would come up empty, suffering their first loss in 2013. CSUMB remains undefeated through its first four matches at 4-0-0 (2-0-0 in CCAA action).
"That was a tough game," SSU head men's soccer coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "(Cal State) Monterey Bay is much improved and its always tough to play at their place. They took advantage of one of their few chances and scored and we didn't put ours away."
Both teams fired an even amount of shots in the opening period, four to be exact, but Cal State Monterey Bay's second shot got past Seawolf keeper
Beau Diaz and into the back of the net; it was Alberto Anguiano's second goal of the season. It would prove to be the only score of the half, and eventually the match.
"We showed a lot of character in the second half and had quite a few chances to score," Ziemer added. "Their defense bent, but didn't break."
The Seawolves' intensity picked up late, but had to fight through a physical Otter team. In fact, Manuel Cazares was awarded his second yellow card of the match at 78:01, resulting in his ejection and CSUMB was forced to play a man down for the final 12 minutes. However, the seven shots taken by SSU during that span never found netting and the Seawolves were forced to take the loss.
"Friday was a tough match against (San Francisco State) and our legs were heavy to start the game," said Ziemer. "We made several changes and
Daniel Theobald,
Jose Avalos and
Raspreet Sandhu came in and played very well. Red-shirt freshman
Ryan Rohane played 90 minutes for the second game in a row and was excellent."
Ziemer finished by saying, "We need to bounce back and get ready for (Cal State) Stanislaus and (Cal State) East Bay next weekend."
Sonoma State will return home to face Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, kicking off from the Seawolf Soccer Field at 12:30 pm.
