ROHNERT PARK, Calif.
--  A tremendous defensive effort paid off on Friday afternoon as Sonoma State scored twice in the final 20 minutes to beat division rival Cal State Stanislaus 2-0 in men's soccer action in Rohnert Park.  Senior goalkeeper Beau Diaz recorded his third shutout of the season while also picking up an assist as the Seawolves improved to 3-1-1, 2-1-0 CCAA and moved into a tie atop the CCAA North Division table with Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Warriors remain winless in CCAA play at 1-3-1, 0-3-0 CCAA.

"This was a good win for us," said head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "Our defense was solid, we generated a lot of chances, and we put a couple away."

Though Sonoma State had better opportunities in the first half and through the middle of the second, neither team was able to find the net.  The cold spell was snapped in the 73rd minute by Sonoma when sophomore Sean Callahan blasted one to the left of the keeper.  Callahan retrieved the ball off corner from senior Nico Spann, who was credited with the assist.

The Seawolves tacked on an insurance goal in the 82nd when Diaz snatched the ball and punted a perfect ball behind the Warrior defense.  Sophomore Chris Pihl was able to run under it and score from fairly short distance.

"The second goal was crucial," remarked Ziemer.

Diaz's assist was the first by a Sonoma State goalkeeper since October 24, 2007 when Brook Johnson posted one against Notre Dame de Namur.

The Seawolves fired 14 shots and allowed just two to Cal State Stanislaus, neither of them on goal. They also had a decisive 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.  The game was quite physical with 43 fouls and eight yellow cards accrued.

The Seawolves haven't lost to Cal State Stanislaus at home since 1988, a span of 22 games.  They are 20-0-2 in Rohnert Park against the Warriors during that stretch.

Sonoma State returns to the pitch on Sunday when they take on Cal State East Bay.  Kick off is slated for 11:30 am.
