Last Minute Goal Leaves 15th-Ranked Sonoma Fit To Be Tied

Cara Curtin scored twice in Friday's 2-2 draw with Cal State Stanislaus.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.
--  Senior Cara Curtin scored twice in the final 30 minutes to give Sonoma State a one-goal lead, but Katelyn Nebesnick of Cal State Stanislaus found the answer with just 45 seconds left in regulation, pavingthe way for a 2-2 tie in a women's soccer battle between two of the top teams in the nation.  For both sides it was the first non-win of the season as they entered the matchup a combined 8-0-0 and ranked 11th and 15th in the nation.  At the end of the day, the pair remain atop the CCAA North table with identical 4-0-1, 2-0-1 CCAA records.

A strong crowd of over 500 were on hand for a battle that had all the feeling of a playoff game.  With both teams featuring prolific strikers and stingy defenses, the fixture lived up to its billing with the teams deadlocked through 60 minutes.

11th-ranked Cal State Stanislaus drew first blood in the 60th minute when a Kirsten Coleman cross was met by Sabrina Williamson and booted into the goal.  The Stanislaus lead would last for exactly ten minutes before Curtin, fresh off a breather on the bench got into a one-on-one with the keeper and smoothly chipped one home.  Margi Osmundson was given the assist.

Back on level ground, Sonoma State continued the pressure, seeing their persistence pay off in the 86th minute.  Fed by her sister, Lauren Curtin, Cara scored on a header from five yards out to give the Seawolves a 2-1 lead with just over four minutes left.

With under a minute remaining, Karlie Nestler sent the ball upfield to a streaking Nebesnick, who was able to beat keeper Amanda Hadidian.

Sonoma produced several promising threats in each of the overtimes, piling up a total of five shots, four of them on goal.  They were turned away each time, however, and had to settle for the 2-2 draw.

The Seawolves led in shots, 17-15, and corner kicks, 8-7.

The Seawolves and Warriors will meet again on October 27th in Turlock.  Next up, however, is a Sunday afternoon matchup with Cal State East Bay.  Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm and will be preceded by the men's game.
