Sandhu Nets Golden Goal In Double OT; Seawolves Win 1-0

BOX SCORE Sonoma State 1, Cal State East Bay 0 (F/2OT) -- Box Score

HAYWARD, Calif. --
Raspreet Sandhu picked a good time to score his first-career goal as the freshman connected on a goal from 15 yards out with just 2:30 left in double overtime to give the Sonoma State men's soccer team a sudden 1-0 victory over Cal State East Bay on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward.  The Seawolves improve to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the CCAA while the Pioneers (0-6-0, 0-4-0 CCAA) are still searching for their first point of the 2013 campaign.

"That was a great win," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "Daniel Theobald played a great ball into Brenton Frame and he dropped it back to Raspreet, who hammered it into the top right corner.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, both teams resorted to overtime to decide a result.  With :00.8 seconds left on the game clock, Sonoma State put the ball into the back of the net, but was immediately waved off after an offsides call came in from the sideline referee.

Much like the first OT, the second didn't feature much offense, but the only shot taken in the period found its way into the goal and it was off the foot of Sandhu after Brenton Frame passed it back to him.  The golden goal was SSU's 12th shot of the match and the fourth on goal.  Meanwhile, CSUEB was held without a shot attempt in either of the two overtime periods, but recorded 11 on the afternoon.

"(Cal State) East Bay battled hard, but I thought we had the better chances," added Ziemer.  "Once again our defense was solid. We have been tough to score on."

Seawolf goalkeeper Beau Diaz made three stops in the victory, tallying his fourth shutout of the season, and the ninth of his career.  Pioneer netminder Bryce Bookhamer also made three saves on Sunday.

Originally scheduled to play Sunday's match at the Seawolf Soccer Field, Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay were forced to move the match to Hayward due to heavy rain Saturday morning that made the Seawolves' home field unplayable.  Therefore, the Nov. 1 match between the two teams originally scheduled to be played in Hayward will be relocated to Rohnert Park, times are yet to be determined.

Sonoma State will head south next weekend to play a pair of CCAA South Division opponents in Cal Poly Pomona (Friday, 4:30 pm) and UC San Diego (Sunday, 12:00 pm).
