POMONA, Calif. --
Aaron Glover scored his first goal of the season to knot the match at 1-1 early in the second half, but the Sonoma State men's soccer team surrendered two goals over the next eight and a half minutes in Friday's 3-1 loss to host Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Field.  The Seawolves fall to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the CCAA while the Broncos improve to 4-2-1 (2-2-1 CCAA).

Sonoma State came out agressively on both offense and defense in the opening minutes of the match, and perhaps a little too much.  Just 9:15 after kickoff, the Seawolves were whistled for a hand ball just inside the 18-yard box, to which Cal Poly Pomona was awarded a penalty kick that Abiel Coronado converted to put the hosts up 1-0.  The momentum swung the Broncos' way and CPP would hold onto the narrow 1-0 lead at halftime with a 9-4 advantage in shots.

Not even a minute after halftime, Kelly Davila had an opportunity to knot the match at one goal apiece, but his header attempt sailed high and SSU remained scoreless until Aaron Glover came through with the equalizer at 49:46 after a cross from Davila.  The Seawolves would keep the pressure on the Broncos, but CPP's Brandon Cortez took a breakaway and fired it past Beau Diaz from 20 yards out to recapture the lead for Cal Poly Pomona at 2-1, just under four minutes later.  Then, five minutes later, the host Broncos found the net again, and it was Cortez, again, to put CPP up by two goals at 3-1 at 58:20.

From that point on, the Seawolves managed just one more shot offensively.  In fact, SSU was held without a shot attempt in the final 26:45 after Taylor Varnadore's header attempt in the 64th minute that went up and over the crossbar.  For the match, Cal Poly Pomona outshot Sonoma State, 17-8.  Of the eight shots taken by the Seawolves, only one would be on target -- Glover's shot in the 50th minute that found the back of the net.

Sonoma State heads south on Sunday to play No. 22 UC San Diego in La Jolla at Noon before returning home for a four-match homestand, beginning with a Friday contest with Cal State L.A. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
