BOX SCORE #16 Sonoma State 3, UC San Diego 2 -- Box Score
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- For the first time in 19 all-time matchups, the Sonoma State women's soccer team defeated UC San Diego, thanks to
Margi Osmundson's second goal of the day in the 86th minute that lifted the 16th-ranked Seawolves over the host Tritons, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in La Jolla. With the victory, SSU remains unbeaten at 6-0-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the CCAA. UCSD drops to 3-2-3 and 2-1-3 in conference play.
The Seawolves, now 1-15-3 all-time against the Tritons, had tied UCSD in both meetings last season, including a 1-1 deadlock in the CCAA championship match that ended in UC San Diego capturing the banner via penalty kicks.
After a Triton goal in the first 11 minutes of the match, Osmundson scored six minutes later at 16:39 to knot the match at 1-1. At 36:49,
Melissa Lafranchi netted the go-ahead goal before halftime; it was Lafranchi's first-career score. UC San Diego tied the match again with a score in the 57th minute, but Osmundson came through once more, this time at 85:33 to put Sonoma State up 3-2. The Tritons had one final attempt to score another equalizer, but a save by SSU freshman
Allison Hadidian with eight seconds left on the game clock helped secure the win.
While Sonoma State outshot UC San Diego 12-4 in the opening period, the Tritons bounced back to hold an 8-4 shot advantage in the final half, but the Seawolf defense held strong when it needed to most. All told, SSU led 16-12 in shots, although UCSD had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Hadidian and her counterpart Kelcie Brodsky each made four saves for their respective teams.
Offensively, Osmundson and
Lauren Curtin fired a team-high four shots apiece while
Cara Curtin and
Melissa Lafranchi attempted three shots each.
Despite the fact that SSU head coach
Emiria Salzmann Dunn is just 1-1-2 in three seasons against UC San Diego, and that the Seawolves went 0-3-1 in Salzmann Dunn's first four games at helm of the program in 2011, she sports a 30-10-7 coaching record at Sonoma State, a winning percentage of .713.
Sonoma State will now return home to begin a four-match homestand. The Seawolves will host Cal State L.A. on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
