ROHNERT PARK --
In the 74th minute, senior Kelly Davila controlled an Aaron Glover pass with his chest, fought off a defender, spun around, fired a right-footed laser past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead late in the match, and it would hold up to give the Sonoma State men's soccer team a narrow 1-0 victory over Fresno Pacific in the 2013 season opener for both teams as part of the Seawolf Classic on Thursday evening at the Seawolf Soccer Field.

In the earlier game, CCAA-foe San Francisco State knocked off Montana State Billings, 2-0 (click here for recap).

"We got a little tired with the heat, but we kept fighting and found a way to win," head coach Marcus Ziemer said following the win.  "Our defense was outstanding.  FPU was dangerous in transition, but we did a good job of keeping them in front of us."

Both teams had strong defensive efforts for the entire 90 minutes, but a slight Sunbirds miscue at the 73:12 mark put the good guys up by a goal.

"Kelly (Davila) showed great composure on the goal," Ziemer said.  "(Aaron) Glover played a great ball over the top and Kelly ran onto it and slotted it."

Only 12 combined shots were taken on Thursday, six by each team.  Fresno Pacific netminder Fabian Rangel made two stops while his counterpart, Seawolf senior Beau Diaz, didn't face any shots on target.

"That was a great win against a very good team, but we need to recover tomorrow and get another win on Saturday," added Ziemer.  "Montana State Billings was very good (against SF State) and will be ready to play."

The second and final day of the Seawolf Classic is set for Saturday.  San Francisco State will play Fresno Pacific at 2:30 pm, followed by Sonoma State and Montana State Billings at 5:00 pm, both at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
