BOX SCORE #18 Sonoma State 7, Antelope Valley 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --
Alicia Mertz netted her first career hat trick on Friday afternoon as the 18th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team cruised to a 7-0 win over the University of Antelope Valley in their first game of the 2013 season.
Lauren Curtin tacked on two goals and
Lauren Fryer assisted on three of her own as the Seawolves scored early and often on a sunny afternoon in Rohnert Park. At the end of the day, the stat sheet showed a 57-1 advantage in shots for the Seawolves, who improve to 1-0-0 on the season. The Pioneers drop to 0-2-0.
The Seawolves set the tone early on Friday, scoring just 44 seconds into the contest when
Lauren Curtin poked one in off a
Taylor Enzler assist. The goal was the second-fastest to start a game in school history, trailing only a 20th-second goal by Lindsay Catton in 2006.
Another score was tacked on just seconds later when Mertz found net for the first time. Her long distance strike which, perhaps justifiably, was mistaken for a cross by the defense, sailed over the keeper's head and into the corner of the net. Just 79 seconds into the game, the Seawolves had two goals on the board.
A third goal followed by Mertz in the 17th-minute after she kissed the left post with a shot to make it 3-0. The Pioneers bucked down a bit from there, giving up shots, but no goals for the rest of the half.
Just seconds into the second half, however, the Seawolves re-opened the ledger. This time it was Curtin's turn as she blasted the ball into the right side of the net off a cross from Fryer.
Fryer did a nice job setting up the next two goals as well, finding Mertz for her third goal in the 56th and
Cara Curtin in the 57th.
Gabby Squarcia closed out the scoring when she hammered home a ball from close range off an assist from
Anna Martin in the 87th minute.
Sonoma peppered UAV goalkeeper Alejandra Valdivia with shots all afternoon. To her credit, Valdivia made 18 saves and made several nice plays to keep the goal count at seven.
The Seawolves used
Allison Hadidian and
Tara Funk in net. Neither saw much work as the ball was in the Pioneers' box for much of the contest.
The 57 shots attempted by Sonoma State established a new school record. The one shot allowed is one off the school record of zero, accomplished twice.
The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday when they host Cal Baptist in a crucial non-conference regional match up. Game time is set for 12:00 pm
