SEASIDE, Calif. -- Despite allowing just 17 points in the second half, the Sonoma State women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 17-point halftime deficit, due in part by an 0 for 18 effort from three-point range, in Saturday's 50-36 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside. The Seawolves have now lost eight straight games, falling to 2-14 overall and 1-11 in the CCAA. The Otters earned their first conference victory of the season, rising to 1-11 in CCAA action and 4-11 overall.
Sonoma State managed to convert just 25.5 percent of its shots on 14 of 55 from the floor, misfiring on all 18 three-point attempts in the ballgame, 11 of which came in the final period. While the Seawolves trailled 33-16 at halftime, their defense held the Otters to just 24.2 percent from the floor in the second half on 8 of 33 shooting, but the SSU offense couldn't break the ice, either.
Kristina Fahey and
Taylor Acosta scored eight points each to lead Sonoma State, followed by six points from both
Molly Kommer and
Bronte Sheahan.
Cal State Monterey Bay's Alexous Robinson notched a double-double to lead all players in both points and rebounds with 12 and 12, respectively. The Otters finished with a 33.9 percent efficiency from the hardwood, including 6 for 28 from long range. CSUMB also attempted just two shots from the free throw line -- Robinson made both. The hosts corralled 50 rebounds to SSU's 35.
Sonoma State will open the second half of the CCAA season next Friday on the road at Chico State, tipping off at 5:30 pm in Acker Gymnasium before heading to Cal State Stanislaus next Saturday. The Seawolves will then return home to play six of their final eight games of the season within the friendly confines of The Wolves' Den.
